Visitation is from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hillview Funeral Chapel. A family gathering Sunday afternoon at the Arana residence in a First Street apartment complex turned tragic shortly after 4 p.m. Abraham had stepped out to go to the store and buy groceries for a barbecue. He backed up his Ford pickup without realizing his baby daughter had left the house and had crawled underneath the vehicle. The child was trapped underneath the vehicle s right rear tire. Firefighters responding to the medical aid dispatch found the girl lying underneath the vehicle between the front and rear tires. Scores of. relatives and neighbors from the adjacent single-story apartments were gathered around. "The mother was hysterical," said Assistant Fire Chief Wayne Brooks. Firefighters said the child was breathing when they arrived and when they loaded her onto Medi-Flight, which landed in an alfalfa field near the intersection of First Street and Walnut Avenue. Sgt. Noel Vento, the f1rst police officer at the scene, said Anna had placed his daughter inside the residence and closed the door only moments earlier because she had followed him outside. He had secured her in the house, said Vento. "Somehow the baby managed to get out of the house and wander underneath the truck." Before backing up Arana sat in the cab a few minutes while speaking with his older son. Abraham, Jr., who was standing outside the driver door. Arana did not notice his daughter, who could walk, leave the house. He backed the vehicle only a short distance before feeling a bump. At that point, Abraham. Jr., who had gone back into the house, ran outside yelling "The baby, the baby." Arana got out and found his daughter trapped underneath the rear wheel. He hurriedly backed the pickup off the girl.
