The rosary is at 7 p.m. at Hillview Funeral Chapel. Visitation starts at 4 p.m. at the funeral chapel. A mass will be said at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Church in Patterson. Interment will be at Patterson District Cemetery. Alvarez, a native of Mexico, was formerly a custodian for Patterson Unified School District. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church. Survivors include his wife Carmen Alvarez of Grayson: sons Noe Alvarez of Grayson, and. Wilbert Ruiz of Waterford; daughters Estella Martinez of Grayson, Rosalinda Torres of Snelling and Valria Alvarez of Grayson; brothers Ciro Alvarez of Westley, Felix Alvarez and Fabian Alvarez, both of Modesto; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Amaral Craig W 930223 p11 Craig W. Amaral, 37; Final rites were held Saturday in Newman for former West Side resident Craig William Amaral. He died Feb. 17 at Doctors Medical Center in Modesto. He was 37. A native of Merced, he lived on the West Side for 27 years before making San Francisco his residence 10 years ago. He was an interior designer and a graduate of Orestimba High School in Newman in 1975. A rosary was recited Friday evening at Hillview Funeral Chapel in Newman. A Mass was celebrated Saturday morning at St. Joachim's Catholic Church in that city. Burial was in Hills Ferry Cemetery. Hillview Funeral Chapel handled the arrangements. Anson-Newman Flora 930216 p12 ‘Dolly' Anson-Newman, 84; A funeral service was held here Monday for Flora "Dolly" Anson-Newman of Crows Landing who died at her residence last Thursday. She was 84. A native of Idaho, she had lived in Crows Landing the last 16 years. She was a homemaker. The service was held at Hillview Funeral Chapel in Patterson. Her remains are to be scattered at sea. Armanino Clara M 930520 p5 Clara Armanino, 91; Clara Marie Armanino, a four-year resident of Patterson, died Tuesday in Newman where she was a patient at the San Luis Convalescent Hospital. She was 91. She was a native of Italy and was a retired stock clerk. A rosary will be recited tonight (Tuesday) at 6:30 p.m. at the Grant Miller-John Cox Mortuary, 2850 Telegraph Ave. in Oakland. A graveside service is set for 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Cemetery in San Pablo. Survivors include three nieces, six great-nieces. and four great-great-nieces. Arteaga Ernest Jr 930420 p14 Ernesto Arteaga, Jr.; Ernesto Arteaga Jr., 16-month-old son of Ernesto and Gabriela Arteaga of Modesto, died April 13 at Memorial Medical Center in Ceres. He had been ill for some time. Besides his parents, he is survived by grandparents Abraham Arteaga and Maria Diaz, both of Patterson, and Jose and Eloisa Zaragoza of Mexico. A graveside service was held last Thursday at St. Stanislaus Cemetery. McHenry Chapel of Franklin and Downs was in charge of the arrangements. Ashlock Tracy L 930819 p10 Services Pending For Ashlock; Tracy L. Ashlock died Wednesday at Del Puerto Hospital after an extended bout with heart disease. She was 20. Services had not been scheduled by press time Wednesday. Hillview Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements. Ashlock, 20, was the daughter of Raymond and Mary Ashlock of Stevinson. She had been in a coma for more than four months and was recently transferred from home care to the local hospital. Ashlock went into cardiac arrest last March at Memorial Medical Center while surgeons were performing a Cesarian section to deliver her unborn child. Ashlock had gone into the hospital because of complications from an enlarged heart. Doctors delivered a healthy baby girl, one month premature. But the mother had to be placed on artificial life support and never fully came out of the coma. Ashlock's sister, Donna, died of heart disease in 1989 three years after a heart transplant. Donna Ashlock's story received international attention because it was a rare instance in which the heart donor and recipient were friends. Felip Garza, a 14-year-old Patterson boy, died suddenly when Donna was awaiting a transplant at Pacific Presbyterian Medical Center in San Francisco. Tracy Ashlock is survived by her parents, her daughter, Alexis, and brother, Charles Ashlock of Patterson. He was a self-employed painter for 20 years. Barnes was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Patterson. Bettencourt Emily L 930629 p10 Emily Bettencourt, 85; A longtime West Side resident who had lived in Patterson the past 12 years died Sunday at Doctors Medical Center in Modesto. Emily L. Bettencourt died at age 85. She retired many years ago as owner of the Bettencourt Market in Gustine and later in Crows Landing. She was a member of Our Lady of Miracles Church and its Altar Society, Gustine, as well as the Catholic Daughters of America. She was a native of Novato. A rosary will be recited Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Our Lady of Miracles in Gustine, with visitation to begin at 4 p.m. prior to the rosary. Birch Bill 930914 p12 Bill Birch, 53; A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 18 at 11 a.m. in the Graham-Hitch Funeral Chapel in Pleasanton for former Patterson resident Bill Birch. Born March 25, 1940 in Palo Alto, Birch died Sept. 8 in Pleasanton of a heart attack. He was 53. During the 23 years Birch lived in Patterson, he was a general building contractor, taught sixth grade at Las Palmas School, was a part time instructor for Modesto Junior College, was a member of the Patterson Fire Department, an EMT and president of the Patterson Boosters Club. He is survived by his children, Catherine and Michael Birch, and one grandchild. He is also survived by his widow, Joanne, and stepchildren of Pleasanton. Internment will be private. Black, a former Patterson resident, had lived in Modesto for several years. He was a retired showman and member of the Arizona Showman's Association. He served in the Merchant Marines and was an Army veteran of' World War II. Survivors include daughter Molly Gehman of Modesto, Kim Wells of Patterson, Debbie Cruikshank and Joanne Black, both of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and Delorie Walsh of Olgs, Alberta, Canada. Borba Gilbert Sr 931223 p14 Gilbert Borba, Sr., 83; Longtime Crows Landing resident Gilbert Wesley Borba Sr. died Wednesday at Doctors Medical Center in Modesto. He was 83. A native of Atascadero, he had lived in the Crows Landing area the past 53 years. He was a retired truck driver who had been employed by the Shell Oil Company for many years. He was a former member of the Crows Landing Lions Club and that community's fire department. He was a member of FDES and UPEC. Brush Estella 930824 p2 Estella Brush, 101; A grave side service was held Monday for Estella Brush, who died Wednesday at Hylond Convalescent Hospital in Modesto. She was 101. Visitation was Sunday at Colonial Chapel-Franklin & Downs Funeral Homes in Modesto. The grave side service was at Acacia Memorial Park. Born in Phoenix, Ariz. on Jan. 17, 1892, she lived in the Modesto area for 84 years. Her parents moved the family to California when she was 13 years old, settling in the Laird District on Grayson Road. She married Stanley Brush, whose family owned extensive land on Grayson Road, and the couple farmed the family ranch. Her husband died shortly after their 66th wedding anniversary in 1978. For five years, she resided at Foothill Manor in Patterson, celebrating her 100 birthday there. Survivors include four children, Elma Grundy of Pleasanton, Erma Grundy, Eugene Brush, and Virgil Brush, all of Modesto; a brother, Loren Mosier of Yuba City; two sisters, Candace Nielsen of Morgan Hill, and Beryl Calkins of Yreka. She had 12 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren. Callagy Mary G 930928 p12 Mary Callagy, 88; Services are set for Mary G. Callagy, a native of Bakersfield, had lived in Patterson for eight years, before moving to Modesto about five years ago. She formerly worked as a secretary in banks and real estate offices in Bakersfield. She was a former resident of El Solyo Village. Survivors include her sons Pat Callagy of Kansas City, Mo., and Mike Callagy of Bakersfield. She had five grandchildren. Christopherson Robert L 930525 p2 Robert L. Christopherson, 69; A funeral service will be held today (Tuesday) for longtime Patterson area resident Robert Loyd Christopherson. He died last Thursday at his rural Patterson home after a long illness. He was 69. He was a native of Oakland and had lived here the past 40 years. He served on the Patterson Volunteer Fire Department from 1954-62 and for a short time on the Patterson City Council. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who served from 1943-5 and was a member of Our Saviour Lutheran Church. A service will be held at 10 a.m. at Our Savior's Church. Coutu Sister Claire 930311 p10 Sister Claire Coutu, 71; Sister Claire Coutu, D.H.S., a member of the American Province of the Daughters of the Holy Spirit for nearly 50 years, died March 8 in Putnam, Conn. She was 71. Formerly known as Sister Albert Cecile, she was a native of West Warwick, R.I. She graduated from Putnam Catholic Academy and received her master's and doctor's degrees in Spanish from Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. Sister Claire had a varied career. In Connecticut, she taught on the elementary school level and later at Putnam Catholic Academy. At Annhurst College she taught Spanish and became chairperson of that department, dean of women and chairperson of the Department of Modem Languages. After several years she was named superior-principal of Cathedral High School m Bridgeport. She then assisted families of Hispanics who had younger members involved with court cases or in prison. This later evolved into teaching English as a second language at Cheshire School of Correction in Connecticut. Prior to returning to Putnam last June because of illness, she spent 18 years in the Vice-Province of the Daughters of the Holy Spirit in California. Her last three years were spent here in Patterson performing pastoral duties in both English and Spanish and directing the activities of the St. Vincent de Paul Society for the needy. She is survived by two brothers, Clarence and Norbert Coutu, both of Rhode Island and two sisters, Alberte Vigneau of Rhode Island and Murielle Langlois of Los Angeles. She was a former Girl Scout leader and formerly served on the Sacred Heart Parish Council. He was one of two young men who drowned late last month when their auto plunged into the Delta-Mendota Canal in the Los Banos area. He was a lifelong resident of Patterson and worked for four years as a forklift driver for EsFresh Produce Co. in Tracy. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church. He died Monday at Stanislaus Medical Center in Modesto following a lengthy illness. He was 52. The service will be held at 10 a.m. at Hillview Funeral Chapel. Burial in Patterson District Cemetery will follow. Prior to his illness he was a park maintenance employee for the city of Patterson. He was a member of the Assembly of God Church and visited and ministered at Foothill Manor here for a number of years. He was a lifelong resident of Stanislaus County. Survivors include two daughters, Joy Dennis of Patterson and Jill Dennis of Turlock; one grandchild; his father, Telbert Lee Dennis of Patterson; and three sisters, Anneice M. Dennis, 77; A funeral service will be held here Wednesday for Nina Marie Dennis, 77, who was killed in a two vehicle crash Saturday morning on 1-5 near the Westley exit (see separate news story on page 1). She was a native of Oklahoma and had lived in Patterson since 1936. She re-tired as a cook at Del Puerto Hospital and was a member of the Assembly of God Church of Patterson as well as the Patterson Garden Club. Densmore Harold 931026 p4 City Attorney Densmore Dies; Patterson City Attorney Harold Densmore died Sunday night in a Modesto hospital after a short illness. He was 74. Densmore was a longtime resident of Newman and had practiced law on the West Side for many years. He was raised in Patterson and graduated from Patterson High School. For many years he was in law practice with his father-in-law, William Logan of Patterson, who drew up this city's incorporation papers in 1919. Logan then served as Patterson's city attorney for 53 years until his death 20 years ago. Densmore had served as his father-in- law's assistant and assumed the city attorney duties upon Logan's death. They are the only two city attorneys in Patterson's 74-year history. Densmore Harold 931028 p9 Harold Densmore, 74; A funeral service will be held today, Thursday, in Newman for attorney Harold Densmore, 74, who died Sunday at Memorial North Hospital in Modesto. The service will begin at 11 a.m. at the United Presbyterian Church, 1107 Kern. A private burial will be in the National Veterans Cemetery at Santa Nella. Whitehurst Norton Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. He died after an 11 month battle with cancer, and leaves behind a legacy of devotion to his family and friends and public service to his community and church. Densmore became city attorney of Newman in late 1971 and assumed the same position in Patterson in 1973 upon the retirement of his partner and father- in-law, William Logan. He continued to serve both cities until his death. Patterson Mayor Pat Maisetti, who worked with Densmore for nine years in city hall, commented this week, "Harold was one of those rare individuals who was a true gentleman. That's very rare these days." She continued, "He's going to be missed ... he could write a resolution or commendation with real finesse." Born in Sharon, Wisconsin, he moved to Patterson with his family in 1933. After graduating from Patterson Union High School three years later, he worked briefly for the Bank of Newman as a cashier. He married Jane Elizabeth Logan in 1941, and entered the Army Air Corps in late 1942, serving as a gunnery instructor until being discharged in 1945. He then studied under the G.I. Bill at the University of California, Berkeley, and the University's Hastings College of Law. Upon graduation he moved his family to Newman and began his law practice as a partner in the firm of Logan and Densmore. He was past-president of the Newman Rotary Club, a member of the E Campus Vitus historical organization, and a member of the American Legion. He served as a director of the Mosquito Abatement District, acted as the legal advisor to the Grayson Community Services District, and was an officer and charter member of' the Orestimba chapter of the American Field Service. The Densmore family hosted the first AFS student to study at Orestimba High, Fernando Baccaro of Uruguay. He was a long-time member of the Orestimba United Presbyterian Church and served in a number of capacities including elder, Sunday School teacher, and choir member. He was elected moderator at both the Presbytery and Synod levels and served on the Zephyr Point Commission which oversaw the uses of the Zephyr Point (South Lake Tahoe) conference grounds. Most recently, at the national level, he was appointed a commissioner on the Permanent Judicial Commission of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), representing the Synod of the Pacific. The commission decides appeals regarding church law. He is survived by his wife, Jane Densmore of Newman; a son, William Densmore of Hemet; two daughters, Susan Gary of Los Banos and Anne Lawrence of Newman, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Dompe Americo O 930406 p1a Rites Set For Americo Dompe, 76; Final rites have been scheduled this week for longtime Patterson resident, businessman and community leader Americo Onorato Dompe. He died Monday at age 76 at English Oaks Convalescent Hospital in Modesto. He had been ill for several months. A rosary will be recited Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Born in Ojai, Calif., he graduated from Tracy High School in the class of 1934. However, the Depression and the death of his father prevented his going to college. He had begun operating the family farm at age 13 while he continued his schooling. Mr. Dompe moved to the Patterson-Crows Landing area in 1941 and extensively expanded the farming operation which now includes over 3000 acres of row crops and orchard land. In 1943 he entered the warehouse business and began cleaning, storing and merchandising beans, grains and small seeds. Four years later he expanded his business operations to include the sale of fertilizers and farm chemicals, and later formed the Dompe Supply Company. He was president of the Dompe Warehouse Company, vice president of Dompe Supply Company, and secretary-treasurer of Dompe Bros., Inc. He served as president of the California Lima Bean Growers Association of Oxnard, president of the West Side Producers Association, a Patterson-based business, and a member of the State of California Large Lima Advisory Board. He was a past president of the Patterson 20-30 Club, the Tracy Young Farming Association, the West Side Bean Growers Association, and the Patterson-Westley Chamber of Commerce. He formerly was a director of the Commercial Bank of Patterson, and was awarded an honorary State Future Farmers degree. His social and fraternal activities included past presidency of the Turlock Golf and Country Club, membership in the Commonwealth Club of San Francisco, the Rotary Club of Patterson, the Elks Club of Modesto, and the Monterey Peninsula Country Club. He died suddenly March 5 in New Orleans where he was based in the United States Navy. Death was attributed to a heart attack while he was playing handball. He was born and raised on the West Side and attended Bonita Elementary School in Crows Landing before graduating from Patterson High School in 1975. He entered the Navy as a dental technician and reentered to attend flight school. He received his wings in 1986 after graduating from Norfolk State University in Virginia the previous year with a bachelor of science degree. He was stationed for a time in Rota, Spain, and flew in Western Europe. Most recently he was assigned to flying admirals and VIPs on the East Coast. He died April 25 at his home in Manteca. He was 77. A native of Sebastopol. he came to the ranch in 1934 after graduating from a two-year poultry-husbandry course at the University of California. Davis. He then managed the turkey operations at El Solyo until 1947. Soon thereafter he started his over turkey-breeding farm west of Manteca, returning m 1980. He had attended reunions of El Solyo employees held here in Patterson in recent years. He served as president of the California Turkey Growers Association and for 27 years was a leader of the Lathrop 4-H Club. He was honored with the state 4-H Alumni Award. He was on the advisory board of the Stockton Production Credit Association for 20 years, and was a longtime member of the Lathrop-French Camp Farm Bureau. He served as a director of the San Joaquin Farm Bureau and as a member of the California Farm Bureau Poultry Committee. He was a long time member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church to Manteca and served as a Trustee of the Lathrop Elementary School District for six years. He completed 34 years of perfect attendance with the Manteca Rotary Club. and served as a Paul Marrow Fellow in Rotary. He also worked on tractor restoration with the San Joaquin County Historical Society and was a charter member and founding director of the Manteca Historical Society. Swanson Jr. The former Patterson Judicial District Judge died last Wednesday at his home in Florence, Oregon. He was 69. A native of Turlock, he graduated from Patterson High School in the class of 1941. He served to the U.S. Army from 1942-6. He was named judge of the Patterson Judicial District in 1960 and from 1974-7 served the Newman district as well. He was then appointed the traffic hearing officer for Stanislaus County Superior Court, a position he held until he retired in 1985. He moved from Patterson to Modesto to 1978, and to Oregon in 1990. He was a member and past worshipful master of the Patterson Masonic Lodge, and belonged to Stockton Scottish Rile, Shrine Club and Order of the Eastern Star. He was a former member of the Stanislaus County Association of Judges, Marshals and Constables, as well as the Patterson Rotary Club. She died July 22 at Silver-crest Board and Care in Davis, where she had lived the last several years. She was 88. She was born in Macedonia, now part of Greece, in 1902. A correspondence bride, she came to live in Patterson with her new husband Christo in 1928. He had settled here in 1913. She remained in rural Patterson until 1987 when she was injured in an automobile accident. She had a life-long interest in the community. During World War II she took classes and served as a nurse's aide in Modesto. She was a longtime member of the Federated Church and was a member of the Patter-son Garden Club, winning many ribbons in its shows with her unusual displays. Over the years she won more than 100 ribbons for entries in the food, sewing and handicraft divisions at the state and county fair. In addition to her community life she wrote more than 50 articles for Greek language periodicals, many of them based on her experiences in Patterson. He died Saturday morning at his Modesto home of natural causes. He was 72. He was a native of Olive, Okla., and grew up in that community. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War 11 and was decorated with the Purple Heart. He graduated from Southeastern Oklahoma University and moved to California in 1959 to teach. He served as principal of the Grayson School for several years and as a teacher in Patterson, retiring after 31 years in the profession of education. He was a member of the California Teachers Association and the Turlock Church of Christ. He resided in rural Patterson and Turlock before moving to Modesto. Visitation will be today (Tuesday) from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Allen Mortuary in Turlock. A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Church of Christ, 801 N. Tully Road, Turlock. He was a fixed operations controller for Alfred Mathews in Modesto. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1971-5 and was a member of the Navy Veteran League in Modesto. He died last Saturday at Casa De Modesto after being in failing health for some time. He was 92. A native of Alvarado, Texas, he lived in Patterson 49 years. He was a retired ranch superintendent, having worked for American Fruit Growers, Brawley, O.G. Olson Co., Turlock, and Pacific Farms, Firebaugh. He grew melons that were served to Queen Elizabeth of England upon her visit to New York a number of years ago. He was a member of the Federated Church here and a longtime member and chaplain of the Patterson Masonic Lodge. He also was a long-time member of the Stanislaus County Farm Bureau. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Hillview Funeral Chapel. A service will be held Thursday at 1 p.m., also at the chapel. Burial will be in Patterson District Cemetery.
