Pinkerton Peter B 971021 p9 ‘Trophy King B. Peter Pinkerton Started Teaching Music Here; Many Patterson remember him as the ‘Trophy King. His students recall that he was energetic innovative, and a great teacher. His peers also recognized his efforts, awarding him a prestigious honor that will be presented posthumously next month. Dr. Peter B. Pinkerton, who began his career in music in Patterson, died last Tuesday, Oct. 14, in Ventura. He was 76. An Indiana Native A native of Indianapolis, Ind., he moved with his family to Southern California when he was 9, then to Ventura five years later. After graduation from high school there, he attended Ventura College where he was student body president and was active in the band. He served as the band s drum major when the band participated in the Rose Bowl parade, and he became proficient on the clarinet, bassoon, saxophone, and flute, founding a dance band called Pete s Pirates. Then came a transfer to the College of the Pacific in Stockton. A year later, in 1941, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps where he served until 1945, performing in the Army band for three years. He then returned to UOP, graduating with a major in music, then earning a master's degree and teaching credential in 1947. Came to Patterson: That s when Mr. Pinkerton began his music teaching career in Patterson. Starting with a 13 piece band, he developed it into an 85 member high school organization, and an 81 piece elementary school band. He also directed a 65 member choir. His bands were so successful, winning 22 first place trophies during his seven years here, that he became known as the ‘Trophy King. Local businessman Domingos Farinha remembers Pinkerton well. "He was a great teacher," Farinha recalled this week. "We had one of the finest marching bands around." Farinha recalled that the PHS band was one of the first to perform marching formations at the halftime of football games, a Pinkerton innovation that soon caught on with other schools. Mr. Pinkerton also gained plenty of community support for his bands. Funds were raised and sparkling new uniforms were purchased. Even an entry in the Rose Bowl parade was considered, Farinha remembers, although the requirement of an expensive Patterson float ruled out the trip. Back to Ventura: The enthusiastic musician also taught English here for one year and became the high school s vice principal for one year, all the time continuing his work as a professional musician, performing with two bands in the Stan Kenton style, and with the Stockton Symphony. It was also in Patterson that he met his wife Wanda. They moved to Ventura in 1954 and have lived there since. Mr. Pinkerton stopped performing as a professional musician, but concentrated on his career in education and his family. He taught music and some English at Ventura High School, then became dean of boys. In 1961 he was appointed assistant principal of the new Buena High School. He later moved to the county level, working as administrative assistant and director of secondary education for the Ventura County Superintendent of Schools office. He worked in that county with Keith Daniel before Dr. Daniel came to Patterson as superintendent of schools. He received his doctorate in education from the University of Southern California in 1969 and became assistant superintendent of instruction and personnel three years later, a position he held until his retirement in 1982. He served as choir director at the Church of the Foothills from 1965-87. He also served on many boards and as a moderator during 32 years as a church member. Receives Award: Earlier this year he stepped down as editor of the award winning newsletter of the Association of California School Administrators, a position he held for 25 years. He was a charter member of the organization. He was recently chosen to receive the ACSA's Ferd Kiesel Memorial Distinguished Service Award, which will be presented posthumously in San Diego on Nov. 7. He also held an honorary life membership in the Parent Teachers Association. He was secretary-treasurer of the Patterson Lions Club for two years, served as a director of the Red Cross for two years, and was a member of the Retired Business and Professional Men's Club, serving as its president for one year. Saephanh Kaofoo 970807 p10 Stockton Man Drowns in Aqueduct near Patterson: (Note from 8-121997 article man is Kaofoo Saephanah ) Police are still searching for the body of a Stockton man believed to have drown in the California Aqueduct on Sunday. According to California Highway Patrol Officer John Brugger, a man fell into the aqueduct, just south of Sperry Avenue, while fishing with family and friends at approximately 8 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. A second man, a 21-year-old from Stockton then jumped into the water in an apparent attempt to save the first man. First Rescued: Other members of the party eventually managed to pull the first man out, but the would-be rescuer disappeared is believed to have drowned. "The family's real concerned , which is only natural," said California High Patrol Officer Braun. "This thing has really been a mess for them." The California Department of Water Resources dragged the canal for a short distance but was unable to find the body. The California Highway Patrol has planes flying over the aqueduct and people walking the bank in an attempt to locate it. Difficult Search: Finding the body is difficult because of the depth and speed of the water in the channel. The aqueduct is 150 feet wide at the top, 50 feet wide at the bottom and 32 to 33 feet deep with a current of 6 to 10 mph. Brugger said that the. body is expected to wash downstream until it snags on something. The name of the victim has not been released nor the names of the other parties involved. Saephanh Kaofoo 970812 p1 Drowning Victim Is Identified by CHP; A 21 year old man who appears to have drowned in the California Aqueduct just south of Sperry Avenue, on Sunday, Aug. 3, has been identified as Kaofoo Saephanh of Stockton. According to California Highway Patrol Officer John Brugger, Saephanh drowned when he attempted to rescue another man who fell into the aqueduct during a fishing trip. The first man was pulled from the water by other members of the fishing party, but Saephanh never resurfaced. Body Missing: Saephanh s body has yet to be recovered despite the efforts of dive teams and CHP helicopters searching sections of the aqueduct. The aqueduct is 150 feet at the top, 50 feet wide at the bottom and 32 to 33 feet deep. It has a current of 6 to 10 mph, and a flow of approximately 41,000 cubic-feet per minute. Brugger noted that entire vehicles have been carried for miles down the canal, some of them occasionally surfacing only to disappear again before the anyone can recover them. Looks Calm: "That s an extremely deceiving force out there" said Brugger, "It looks so calm and slow, but it's not. It's very powerful." Saephanh's body is expected to surface eventually, probably miles downstream from Patterson. However, Brugger added that the body might never be recovered if it has been snagged by a piece of debris on the bottom of the aqueduct.
