Gonzalez Raymondo 990817 p1 Raymondo Gonzalez; Patterson area residents were stunned over the weekend after news media accounts of a triple slaying late Friday night on North First Street. It was the city's only multiple death killing in memory. Patterson Police Chief Tyrone Spencer said Monday the shoot-out does not appear to be gang related, although one or more of those involved might have gang affiliations. The investigation into what triggered the shoot-out in which at least six and possibly eight shots were fired was continuing Monday. A fourth person suffered a minor wound, and two slugs were found in a parked car. Possible witnesses were being questioned Monday, including three teenage girls from a nearby city. More Arrests Possible: One suspect was arrested late Saturday morning and is being charged with three counts of homicide. The investigation of others who may have been with him may result in charges being brought against additional suspects, Spencer explained. Arrested was Gabriel Navarro, 25, who has a long record of criminal activity. Navarro has given detectives a statement, Spencer said. A search of the apartment complex area has not turned up the weapon believed to have been used by Navarro. It is a nickel-plated .45-caliber semi-automatic pistol. Anyone having information about the pistol is asked to contact Patterson Police Services at 892-5071. Just what started Friday night's tragic confrontation is still under investigation. Called out Twice: Local sheriffs deputies responded to a call at 11:04 p.m. It came from Ismael Lopez at 211 N. First St. who said four or five young Hispanic males were breaking the windows of an apartment next door at 213 N. First. When the deputies arrived hey spoke to Pedro Valovinos, 40, who lived at the latter address. He gave them descriptions of those he observed breaking out his windows, but by then - about 11:30 - they had run from the scene. The officers then left the complex. At 11:58 p.m. the 9-1-1 dispatcher received calls that gunshots were heard at the apartments. One indicated that a woman had been shot. Crowd Around Victim: Sgt. Joe Camarda and Deputy Vince Hooper rushed to the complex and found a crowd of people around 17-year-old Michelle Amber Saleen. She was alive but had been shot in the upper torso at least once. She was found lying in a carport at 201 N. First, #B. A 50-foot trail of blood led to where she fell. Present at the scene was her younger sister, Heather Saleen. Their address was given as 410 112 N. Second St. Michelle Sateen, not to be confused with another young Pattersonite of the same name, was taken by helicopter to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto. Officers at the complex were notified at 1:30 a.m. that she had died. Uncooperative: Officers reported that people gathered around the Saleens were somewhat uncooperative when they arrived. Moments later the officers were directed to two other shooting victims. They were already dead. Raymondo Gonzalez, 25, who went by the nickname Ray-Ray, suffered one wound in the torso. His address was listed as 226 S. Fifth St. Gonzalez was found in a driveway north of 221 N. First St. The third victim was Valovinos, whose windows had been broken out earlier. His body lay in a pool of blood just inside the open front door of his apartment unit at 213 N. First. Weapon Found: Found at his side was a pistol that had been fired, Spencer noted. Valovinos, it was learned, was a native of Mexico who had lived in this area a number of years. He was employed by Steve Trinta as a farm laborer and had no criminal record here. Deputies found his pregnant wife and several children next door at the Lopez apartment at 211 N. First. It is not known if his wife and children were in their own apartment earlier when the windows were smashed. Suffering a graze on the left side of his neck was Ricardo Rosas, 19, of 240 I St., #A. He was treated at a Modesto hospital and released. Deputies who first arrived at the scene found Rosas standing in a group of spectators. He has not been charged. Personnel from the Crimes Against Persons investigation unit of the Sheriffs Department were immediately called to Patterson and began a check of the crime scene that continued throughout most of the day Saturday. As detectives were notifying all residents of the complex to be on the lookout Saturday morning, Deputy Tom Fara spotted Navarro, who ran into his apartment at 125 N. First St.. There he was arrested without incident at 11:20 a.m. He was found hiding in a closet under a pile of clothes. Navarro has a long list of criminal activity that includes arrests for narcotic possession, possessing stolen property, resisting arrest, disturbing the peace, vandalism, assaults, burglary, possession of` dangerous weapons, violating a court order, and driving while intoxicated. Some Drug Activity: Chief Spencer said the North First Street apartment complex, which houses a number of families with young children has been a drug problem area for a number of years. He recalled two separate shooting deaths in that area back in the 1980s. "But there are a lot of good law-abiding people who live in that area," he also noted. Spencer repeated that it is not believed the shoot-out was in any way gang related. He said the investigation will determine whether one or more of the victims were hit by stray shots and were not the intended targets. "Pedro Valdovinos was no ganger, just a working guy with a family," he added. The Valdovinos body was scheduled to be shipped to Mexico where burial arrangements were being made. Rites for Saleen and Gonzalez were pending Monday at Hillview Funeral Chapel. Goutiere Vernon Dr 990105 p1 Dr. Goutiere Dies; Had Life of Adventure; When Dr. Vernon Goutiere retired from active medical practice at the end of 1987, he looked back on a career that spanned over 40 years, and included the delivery of some 4000 local babies. Two of those babies grew up and were members of his office staff when he retired -- Martha Lomeli and Rosalva Soto. Died at Home They were among many Pattersonites who were saddened to learn of his death Sunday at age 92. Because of his age he had been in failing health, but continued to live at home with his wife Kay. The couple s 54th wedding anniversary was last Wednesday, Dec. 30. The longtime physician was born in India to parents of English and French heritage. His adventures as a young man took him to South America working for United Fruit Co, and finally to this country. He graduated from the University of California at San Francisco in 1938 with a degree in biological sciences and received his master s degree in anatomy a year later. An Honor Student: His graduation from medical school in San Francisco brought him his proudest academic achievement -- Phi Beta Kappa, a straight A average. Dr. Goutiere then served his residency in general practice at a U.S. Navy hospital. He enlisted in the Navy, requested duty in the Pacific at the height of World War II, and became a lieutenant commander and combat physician in the Navy s Seventh Amphibious Fleet. It was in the Pacific that he met his future wife, a Navy physiotherapist on Biak Island, and it was while on duty that they received special permission to marry. Here in 1946: The Goutieres moved to Patterson in 1946 when he went into practice with Dr. Ernest Allen. The physicians had their office over the Eagle Drug Store, now M&M Associates real estate offices. The couple then left for three years but returned in 1950 with the opening of Del Puerto Hospital. Dr. Goutiere, "Vern" to many of his friends, was an avid outdoors man his entire life, starting as a youth growing up in the Himalayas. He told of hiking over high mountain passes into Tibet on breaks from school, and continued to enjoy fishing and hiking the remainder of his life. His adventures took him on safaris to Africa. India and Brazil, and hunting trips to the jungles of Central America. He also became an avid collector of butterflies. A full obituary and final rites are pending. Parker Infant 991005 p1 Infant Dies in Accident; An accident resulting in the death of an infant took place last Wednesday. Deputy Robert Banks responded to a call at 105 Barros in Patterson at about 8:30 a.m. When the officer arrived, a man later identified as Craig Grischott, 38, came running out of the home while giving chest compressions to in infant. According to the officer, the mother, Babette Parker, was on her knees near the house, holding another child and hysterically crying and yelling. Tile baby was taken away by medical personnel in an ambulance, and transported to Emanuel hospital with CPR in progress. He was pronounced dead one hour later. Parker was too upset to speak with Deputy Banks at the time. Parker's four year old daughter recounted the fateful events. Parker had put the infant into his high chair at the table to eat breakfast. She then went to take a shower. The child became thirsty, and as she could not reach the sink in the kitchen, she went to the bathroom in the hall to get a drink of water. Baby Fell: When she returned to the infant, she saw that he had fallen through the area between the arm rest and the seat of the high chair and was stuck there. At that time, the child said that the baby was breathing and moving around. She then left to get Parker. When she and Parker came out, the baby was no longer breathing or moving. When Parker was able to speak to officers, she gave them the additional information that she had not seat belted the boy into the chair. When she came out of the shower, the infant's feet were touching the ground and his face was facing the chair on the left side. The police report indicated that the baby was either strangled in the accident or broke his neck. An investigation is continuing, but there is no indication of foul play. Saleen Michelle A 990817 p1 West Side Numbed by Triple Slaying Michelle Amber Saleen; Patterson-area residents were stunned over the weekend after news media accounts of a triple slaying late Friday night on North First Street. First. When the deputies arrived they spoke to Pedro Valovinos, 40, who lived at the latter address. As detectives were notifying all residents of the complex to be on the lookout Saturday morning. Deputy Tom Fara spotted Navarro, who ran into his apartment at 125 N. First St.. There he was arrested without incident at 11:20 am. He recalled two separate shooting, deaths in that area back in the 1980s. "But there are a lot of good law abiding people who live in that area," he also noted. Spencer repeated that it is not believed the shoot-out was in any way gang-related. He said the investigation will determine whether one or more of the victims were hit by stray shots and were not the intended targets. "Pedro Valdovinos was no ganger, just a working guy with a family," he added. The Valdovinos body was scheduled to be shipped to Mexico where burial arrangements were being made. Valdovinos Pedro 990817 p1a West Side Numbed by Triple Slaying Pedro Valdovinos; Patterson-area residents were stunned over the weekend after news media accounts of a triple slaying late Friday night on North First Street. First. When the deputies arrived they spoke to Pedro Valovinos, 40, who lived at the latter address. As detectives were notifying all residents of the complex to be on the lookout Saturday morning. Deputy Tom Fara spotted Navarro, who ran into his apartment at 125 N. First St.. There he was arrested without incident at 11:20 am. Rites for Saleen and Gonzalez were pending Monday at Hillview Funeral Chapel. Valdovinos Pedro A 990817 p2 Pedro A. Valdovinos, 40; Final rites will be held in Turlock for Pedro A. Velenzuela Rocio 990720 p4 Modesto Girl Drowns at Laird Park During a Family Gathering Rocio Velenzuela; A 9 year old Modesto girl, Rocio Velenzuela, drowned in the San Joaquin River at Laird Park on Sunday. Velenzuela was at the park with her father, Enrique Mendoza, and numerous other family members when she fell into the river at the east end of the park, near the Stanislaus County Honor Farm. "These rivers sometimes have shallow shelves that may only be few inches or feet deep and then they drop off sharply," said Stanislaus County Sheriff's Deputy Tammy Drew. "Well, the girl was running along one of those with some of her cousins when she accidentally ran off the edge and into the deep water. She tried to fight it, but the current got her." Rescue Fails: Drew said that two of the party members apparently jumped in the river after Velenzuela, but they were unable to pull her ashore. Someone called 911 on a cell phone at 2:55 p.m. to report the accident , and the Ceres and Modesto fire departments responded. "They had boats and went into the water right away," said Drew. "AirMed was there, flying over head looking for her." Body Found: A dive team arrived later that afternoon, chose a spot to search based on the river currents and went into water at 4:42 p.m. Velenzuela's body was recovered at 4:48 p.m. approximately 30 yards downstream from where she fell into the river.
