Daniel Lamatina, 40, was hauling spring water, and driving east on Del Puerto Canyon Road, about seven miles up, at an unknown speed. Larnatina, a Madera resident, entered a right turn at an unsafe speed, according to a report from the California Highway Patrol. The water in both tanks then shifted. To compensate, the driver turned the tanker sharply to the left, at which point the water shifted again. The weight caused the right side of the vehicle to be overloaded, and it began to skid. The right side tires of the tractor went onto the south side shoulder of the road. Lamatina then turned sharply to the left, but the vehicle slid off the road and around to the right of the tractor. The rear trailer and dolly came loose and crashed down an embankment, coming to rest in the riverbed. The tractor and front trailer stopped with the tractor blocking the shoulder and the trailer lodged against a large boulder, preventing it from also falling down the embankment During the accident, the cab was crushed on the front and driver s side. Though the driver was utilizing safety equipment he. was killed. The passenger, a young girl, was asleep in the berth of the tractor, and received minor injuries.
