Eberwein Kenneth D 020411 p1 Patterson Man Killed in Major Crash; Cement Truck Involved; A four-vehicle crash early Tuesday morning east of Patterson claimed the life of a Patterson man and closed East Las Palmas to through traffic across the San Joaquin River for nearly 10 hours. Kenneth Eberwein, 44, suffered major injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. He was employed by the county Department of Environmental Resources and was eastbound in a county van on his way to work at the time of the accident about 7:10 a.m. A memorial service for the local man, a Patterson High graduate in the class of 1976, will he held Sunday afternoon at Frank Raines Park.. See full obituary elsewhere in this issue. The 1995 Ford van was one of three eastbound vehicles on the curve just east of the river bridge. The collision occurred less than a quarter mile from the intersection of West Main Street and Jennings Road. California Highway Patrol spokesman Tom Killian gave this account of the accident. He said Robert Ray Ludwig, 18, had just completed a shift at Patterson Frozen Foods and was on his way home to Ceres. Ludwig was driving a 1987 Nissan Maxima. Crossed lines On the east side of the bridge Ludwig s auto crossed over the double yellow lines and collided with a heavy westbound cement truck driven by Keith Lewis Ryan. The impact of the vehicles caused the 2000 Peterbilt to veer into the eastbound lane where it crashed into the van driven by Eberwein. Loaded with nine yards of wet cement, the truck overturned and the cab separated from the chassis and a portion of it came to rest some distance away in a field on the north side of the roadway. The grinding crash also separated the front wheels from the chassis of the truck, and they ended up in a field south of the road. The truck also struck an eastbound 1993 Mazda MX6 driven by 30 year old Kari Vigallon of Patterson. She suffered a compound ankle fracture and was transported by Air-Med helicopter to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto. Belted into cab The 42yearold Ryan, a Modesto resident, was taken by Medi-Flight helicopter to Memorial Medical Center with major injuries including lacerations to the face and legs. Seat belts held him in the disengaged cab. and he was able to step out of it with the assistance of the first rescue workers at the scene. The collision caused the county van, which was first thought to contain hazardous materials picked up by Eberwein from an illegal methamphetamine lab the previous day, burst into flames. Later it was determined that Eberwein had cleaned out the vehicle before heading for home on Monday. The possibility of hazardous material being in the debris that was widely scattered at the scene caused the 10 hour delay in opening the roadway. It did not open to through traffic until 5 p.m. Tuesday, with vehicles routed to the north and south to make bridge crossings of the river. "We had to record all of the physical evidence. and. that just takes time," Killian said; Ludwig sustained moderate injuries to the left elbow and was treated at Memorial Medical Center. False reports It was being reported Wednesday morning on three area radio stations that Ryan had reportedly fallen asleep at the wheel of the cement rig. Killian said the report was "completely wrong" and that he was trying to get through to them to make the correction." Reagan Wilson, the county s chief executive officer, was at the accident scene until midmorning when he went to visit the Eberwein family. Over a half-dozen CHP units, as well as deputies from Patterson Police Services and the Stanislaus County Sheriffs Department, responded to the crash scene. Fire units, from, Mountain View, Patterson, Westley and Modesto also sped to the scene. Drivers were called into the pit area immediately after the crash. The silent shock and prayers of drivers and fans replaced the loud thunder of the cars. "Everyone was in shock," Days said, "People were thinking it was his time to go. He loved driving. It was just his time. The death is the first at Altamont since the track reopened in 1995. Identified by a Patterson High School official, Stanislaus County Coroner s office and, California Highway Patrol report, Erica Nohemi Gonzalez Fuentes, a senior at Patterson High School, and Adrian Aguilar, both 17, died at the accident scene. Rogelio Avalos, 17, and from Patterson, was injured. Fuentes and the two boys were eastbound on Prune Avenue in her two-door 1997 Toyota, traveling at approximately 90- 100 miles per hour. Car started to slide Fuentes failed to stop for a stop sign at Elm Avenue. After she crossed Elm, she lost control of the car. The rear of the car began to slide to the right, and then traveled off the paved portion of the roadway. The car traveled to the north dirt shoulder and slid approximately 40 to 50 feet, became airborne for approximately 40 to 50 feet, and landed on its rooftop upside down in a Turlock Irrigation District, TID, canal. Fuentes was trapped inside the car, and was pronounced dead at the scene. According to Rex Klein, deputy coroner for Stanislaus County, firefighters had to cut out Fuentes before she was pronounced dead. Evidence suggests Aguilar, sitting in the front passenger seat, was ejected from the car, and may not have had a seat belt on. Autopsy performed It also appears that he climbed up the steep hill before he died. An autopsy was performed yesterday, Wednesday, on both teenagers, and results may not be ready for four to six weeks. Avalos, a passenger in the left rear seat, crawled out of the car and walked to a nearby house for help. He sustained moderate to major shoulder and head injuries. He was transported by Medi-Flight to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto. Funeral services for Fuentes and Aguilar are pending. Patterson Irrigator, 09/24/2002, p. 1 Mom Mourns Her Hardworking Son Known as a hard worker and a heartthrob, Adrian Aguilar appeared to have a bright future before him, but that apparition disappeared into thin air just after 5 p.m. last Tuesday. Aguilar and Erica Gonzalez, both 17, perished in an auto accident on Prune Avenue, just east of Patterson. They were heading eastbound at approximately 90 to 100 miles per hour in Gonzalez s 1997 Toyota Celia. A second passenger, 17 year old Rogelio Avalos, survived the accident. He was treated and released from Memorial Medical Center in Modesto. California Highway Patrol Spokesperson Rich Parman said initial investigations indicate drugs or alcohol were not a factor in the accident. Parman said Aguilar and Avalos were both enrolled in a Stanislaus County independent study program. Gonzalez was a senior at Patterson High School. They told me that she drove really fast, that she liked to drive fast, said. Aguilar s mother, Denise Cones. Memorial fund Friends and loved ones have set up a memorial fund in Aguilar s name. Cortes said her son was planning on buying a truck, moving to Mexico and getting married. My son was a little Casanova, Cortes said. "I should say half of Patterson was his girlfriend and part of Westley." Born July 20, 1985, his mother said Aguilar came into this world just in time for lunch. He immediately began sucking his thumb and a nurse handed him a small bottle of formula. He drank all of that and a second bottle. "He was my garbage disposal," Cortes fondly recalled. "He was an eater, a good eater." Aguilar was also a good drawer, specializing in low riders and crosses. He was an altar boy at a Catholic church in San Jose and three brothers and two sisters, ages 7 to 18. survive him. Cones lives with her husband, Ruben Cortes and the other five siblings.
