Arellano Javier 030819 p2 Patterson Man Dies in Crash; A 37-year-old Patterson man died last week in a crash on Highway 33 near Ward Avenue. Javier Arellano was killed at 1:05 am Wednesday, the California Highway Patrol reported Thursday. Driving south in a 1999 Nissan pickup, he veered into the incoming lane and collided head on with a 2003 International big rig that was traveling just over 40 mph in the other direction, CHP officer John Martinez reported. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the rig, Antonio Saucedo of Modesto, was uninjured, according to CHP. Both Saucedo and Arellano were wearing their seat belts. According to the CHP's report, there is no indication that alcohol was a factor in the accident, which remains under investigation. Arellano's truck veered into the oncoming lane for unknown reasons. Anything could have happened. Martinez said. "Unfortunately, there was a big rig coming." Arellano is the fourth person to die in a car crash along Highway 33 in Stanislaus County since Jan. 1, 2002, according to CHP data. A total of 70 crashes have occurred along that highway between the Merced and San Joaquin county lines during the last year and a half. Arvizu Abrahan - female 031217 p1 Two Local Residents Die in Morning Crash; Two Patterson residents died in a car crash early Monday shortly after the passenger called a friend on her cell phone and told him the driver refused to let her out. The friend, according to reports, turned out to be a witness to the fatal accident, which occurred on Ward Avenue south of Elfers Road. Abraham Arvizu, 24, and a 29 year old female passenger, whose name was withheld because her relatives in Mexico had not been located, died some time after Arvizu?s car slammed into a wooden power pole at 2:30 a.m. Neither victim was wearing a seat belt, California Highway Patrol officers said, adding that the woman may have been trying to get out of the car before it crashed. "The passenger telephoned a friend on a cell phone just prior to the accident," CHP spokesman Tom Killian said, "telling him the driver was under the influence, and he would not let her out of the car." Killian said the friend, whose name was not released, got the call and went out to find the pair. He spotted Arvizu?s 1990 Nissan Sentra at Ward and Sperry avenues. The friend followed the car south on Ward and then watched it go out of control, missing the curve near the Elfers Road intersection, Killian said. He said he didn?t know how fast Arvizu was driving or where he was going. He apparently missed the turn at Elfers Road, failing to negotiate a curve in the roadway at the intersection of Ward Avenue and Elfers Road, Killian said. Arvizu reportedly overcorrected, causing the car to slide out of control across both lanes and collide with a power pole off the west shoulder of Ward Avenue. The West Stanislaus Fire Protection District responded to the scene, along with the CHP. "He was pinned in, and she, was partially ejected," Jeff Gregory, a fire department division chief, said. Despite the impact of the accident, the collision did not knock over the power pole, Gregory said. "It moved it a little bit," he said, "and we called Turlock Irrigation District, and they were out there very quickly to take care of the problem." DeGuzman Adeline 030821 p2 3 Die in 1-5 Crash South of Westley; A Suisun City woman and a Vallejo couple died early Monday in a single-car crash on Interstate 5, just south of Westley. Killed were Adeline DeGuzman, 19, and Josefina and Gregorio Gutierrez, both 75. California Highway Patrol reported that motorist Joyce Gutierrez, 18, and her family were returning home from a family gathering in San Diego. The Suisun City woman was headed north near Ingram Creek Road in a 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche just after 3 am. Gutierrez's father, Jose Gutierrez, 56, also of Suisun City, had been driving the Avalanche just south of Santa Nella, according to the report. He reportedly awoke his daughter to take the wheel. The car continued northbound at 75 to 80 mph in the left lane. Then for unknown reasons, it swerved hard to the right and the left and to the right again. It flipped five times in the roadway before going down an embankment off the right shoulder, according to the report. Killian said family friend Adeline DeGuzman, who was seated in the left rear, was partially thrown from the vehicle and suffered fatal injuries. The driver's grandparents. Josefina and Gregorio Gutierrez, were sitting in the middle and right rear. Both remained in the car and died in the crash. Joyce Gutierrez suffered a fractured skull and was transported to Modesto's Doctors Medical Center, where she is listed in good condition. Jose Gutierrez, seated in the passenger seat, went to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto, where he is listed in serious but stable condition with a broken vertebrae. The CHP report indicates that everyone in the car was wearing a seat belt. Joyce Gutierrez was not cited in the accident. The slow lane was closed for 30 minutes Monday morning as CHP officers investigated the accident. "its been kind of a bad weekend for people," said Patterson Police (sic. Deoliveira Bryan 031231 p1 Infant Dies in Crash on Ward Avenue; 2nd Fatality at Intersection this Month A 4 month old baby from Crows Landing died Sunday evening after his mother?s sport-utility vehicle spun out in front of an oncoming pickup truck just south of Patterson, causing a collision. Bryan Deoliveira, son of Crows Landing residents Marcus and Raquel Deoliveira, was thrown out of the SUV at Elfers Road and Ward Avenue after the impact of the accident caused his child seat to detach from its base. The baby landed in a dirt field west of Ward Avenue, according to a California Highway Patrol report. "It?s very unusual," CHP spokesman Tom Killian said of the car seat?s detachment. "We don?t know if there was a failure on the part of the device or if there was human error involved." CHP officers now are investigating the cause of the seat?s separation, he said. Meanwhile, Raquel Deoliveira, 28, was moved from the intensive care unit at Doctors Medical Center in Modesto on Monday evening, according to her brother, Arthur Victoria. Doctors said she may be able to leave the hospital within the next two or three days, he said. Deoliveira, who was taken to the hospital on Sunday via helicopter, suffered broken ribs and abrasions to the head and left shoulder, according to CHP and Patterson Fire Department reports. She also had a brokers collar bone, punctured lung and injured shoulder blade, Victoria said. The collision occurred while Deoliveira traveled southbound at an unknown speed on Ward Avenue in her 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer at 5:45 p.m., according to a CHP report. Meanwhile Patterson resident Luis Rey Espinoza, 52, drove his 2001 Dodge Dakota northbound on the same road at about 50 miles per hour just south of the intersection; the report stated. The Trailblazer traveled too quickly to navigate the offset intersection of Ward Avenue and Elfers Road and spun out of control, careening clockwise into the northbound lane, the report stated. Espinoza saw the oncoming Trailblazer spinning out and stepped on the brakes to avoid an accident. However, his pickup collided with the left side of the Trailblazer, causing Bryan to be ejected, the CHP report stated. Bryan actually remained in the car seat after being thrown out of the vehicle, Victoria said. Though an autopsy has yet to be conducted, Victoria said Bryan was not breathing at the time family members arrived. However, she also said Bryan did not appear to have too many visible injuries, with the exception of a slightly swollen head. Victoria said. "It?s very, very hard," Victoria said. "This was Dad and Mom?s first grandchild." The Elfers Road and Ward Avenue intersection, which contains an S-shaped curve along Ward, was the site of another fatal accident a little more than two weeks ago. In that Dec. 15 incident, Patterson resident Abrahani Arvizu, 24, drove his car into a wooden power pole on Ward Avenue, killing himself and his 29 year old passenger Rita Ulloa, also of Patterson. Neither passenger was wearing a seat belt in that incident. CHP officers believe Arvizu was drunk, and they said Ulloa called a friend on her cell phone to say Arvizu would not let her out of the car Unlike the Dec. 15 incident there is no indication that alcohol played a role in Sunday?s accident, and everyone involved wore safety restraints. Patterson Fire Marshall Steve Hall said both cars appeared to be totaled in Sunday?s accident. Despite the fact that Elfers Road and Ward Avenue have contained two fatal accidents in the past month, Hall said there have been few accidents that have taken place there. Meanwhile, Victoria said Raquel Deoliveira appeared to be improving as of Tuesday. "We?re just taking it one day at a time," he said of his family. Gail Victoria J-Katharine 031231 p4 Life Meant Community Service; Victoria Jeans grew up the third of seven children in Patterson. The Oregonian Portland-- For Victoria Jeans Gail and her 24 year old daughter, Katharine, community service was a way of life. Victoria, 51, worked with non-profits in California and Oregon for three decades, most recently as the chief financial officer for the Portland Schools Foundation. And, one day a week, she served as a spiritual director, advising people on their religious explorations. Katharine, a Smith College graduate, wanted to change the world. For her, that meant working in the slums of Calcutta, serving in the Peace Corps in Morocco and persuading high school students at her alma mater to volunteer. They died Sunday morning when their car hit ice, spun out of control on U.S. 26 near Warm Springs and collided with a sport-utility vehicle. The SUV?s driver, Daniel Trumps, and his wife suffered minor injuries, Warm Springs police said. Victoria and Katharine, known as Kate, were on their way to Victoria?s sister?s 50th birthday celebration in Bend, Ore. The crash, still under investigation by Warm Springs police, tore into one of Portland?s most activist families, and punched a hole in hundreds of lives the pair touched. Kevin Jeans Gail, Victoria?s husband, is chief of staff to Portland Commissioner Jim Francesconi. They had been married for 25 years and worked on a series of community projects, including helping form and lead the former Portland Organizing Project, a coalition of churches formed to push for social change. Kevin Gail and the couple?s two sons -- Conor, 16, and Sean, 21 - were at home at the time of the crash. Speaking at his Northeast Portland home on Monday, Kevin Gail said his wife was the family?s spiritual center and his daughter was the fiery go-getter. "Kate had great drive and great energy," he said. Victoria walked with people on their spiritual journey. The world would always come away from an experience with them feeling enriched San Francisco. The first night they went out, Kevin recalls, Victoria told him that she loved him. "But if you knew her, you?d know she loved everybody," he said. "She was all about love." Less than a year later, they married and she moved to Portland where they both worked with Oregon Fair Share, a grass-roots organizing group. Kate, their oldest child, attended St. Mary?s Academy in downtown Portland, taking the school?s focus on community service to heart and developing a travel bug that saw her visit five continents by age 22. A few nights before the accident, Kori Pienovi and three other friends from Kate?s high school days dined out with Victoria and Kate. "When you talk about living life to the fullest, they actually did it," said Pienovi, who traveled to Calcutta with Kate three years ago to work alongside Mother Teresa?s Missionary Sisters of Charity in an orphanage and a home for the dying. "They actually lived every day as if something like this could happen." Pienovi and her friends spent Monday reading through the scores of narrative e- mails that Kate had sent over the years. from Moroccan villages to New York City, where she started her latest job at Teach For America in October. After graduation, Kate began serving with the Peace Corps in Morocco in 2001, learning Arabic in a six week crash course. The war in Iraq cut short her stint in spring 2003. While in Morocco, she won a grant from the U S Agency for International Development to build a health clinic and birthing center in a remote village. Madeleine Mader, a friend of the Jeans Gails and a Peace Corps worker in Africa for 10 years said "I?ve known hundreds of your young people and I used to supervise hundreds of Peace Corps volunteers, and it?s not an exaggeration to say that she was the brightest star." Victoria attended UCLA, but left the school at age 19 after her father died. She moved to Corvallis and attended Oregon State University but didn't finish, instead opting for the job with the alliance in San Francisco. Today, her desk at the Portland Schools Foundation is crowded with inspirational sayings and pictures of her family. Padilla Jeriel 031227 p12 Man Dies in 1-5 Rollover North of Westley; A highway accident north of Westley left one man dead early Wednesday after the van he was in rolled over off Interstate 5. Jeriel Padilla, 31, of Los Angeles, was ejected through one of the vans windows after a van driven by Buena Park resident Song Nan You drifted off the road at about 65 to 70 mph south of the Westley rest area. He died from multiple force injuries, according to the Stanislaus County Coroners office. Unlike other passengers in the van, Padilla was not wearing a seat belt, according to a California Highway Patrol report. When a vehicle is overturned at this speed, its going to fling you out of there if youre not wearing a seat belt, said CHP officer Rich Parman on Wednesday. Wednesdays accident took place at 2:17 a.m. while 52 year old You drove her 2000 Toyota Sienna northbound on I-5. She was traveling to San Francisco at about 65 to 70 mph in the fast lane when, for some unknown reason, she lost control, heading across the slow lane and onto the right hand shoulder of northbound I-5. according to a CHP report. The van collided with a wood-posted barbed wire fence and overturned several times, the report stated, landing on its wheels. The CHP report stated there was light rain, and it was windy and cloudy at the time of the accident. However, Parman said he doubted that was the main cause of the accident. Generally, when vehicles veer off the road, it is because the driver has been drinking or has fallen asleep at the wheel, he said. Alcohol is not believed to have played a role in this case, making sleepiness a probable factor, Parman said. Passenger Jesus Saavedra, 17, of Los Angeles, was taken to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto for major injuries, and passenger Robert Guido, 45, of Los Angeles, also was sent to Doctors for moderate injuries. Neither of them was staying in the hospitals intensive care unit on Friday, though hospital officials said they could not give any further information. Meanwhile, You and her husband, Chun You, 56, were taken to Sutter Tracy Community Hospital, where Song was treated for minor injuries, and Chun was treated for moderate injuries. Both have been released. Mario Delgado, 32, of Los Angeles, and Yoni Rivas, 24, of Van Nuys, both received minor injuries and did not require hospital treatment.
