Bean Norman 561018 p4 Norman Bean, 18, Commits Suicide; With the words "the girls don t like me, I m going to shoot myself," Norman Bean, 18 year old son of Mr and Mrs. G. S. Bean of Gaffery Road, Vernalis, shot himself in the mouth early Saturday. The youth was sitting on the bed in a room of his parent s home with a .30 06 rifle between his knees. It was loaded with GI issue ammunition, Stanislaus sheriff's investigators report. He placed the barrel of the gun in his mouth and apparently leaned forward to pull the trigger, investigators theorize. James P. Burke, 19, of Watts Avenue, was just walking out of the room and had replied to Beans's statement with the words, "You're crazy, come on out here." He told investigators as he closed the door behind him he heard the shot. The two boys had gone to the Bean home with Rosalee Serpa, 18, of 2313 Miller, and Tommie Ann Moreland, 18, of Rt. 2, Box 1055A, Oakdale-Salida Highway. The two girls are usherettes at the State Theatre in Modesto and both are seniors at Modesto High School. Tommie Ann was a last minute date for young Bean, she told investigators. The boys had half a fifth of Vodka that Burke claims they purchased from a Skid row wino, a gallon of orange juice and a bottle of Seven-up. The girls drank some of the orange juice and Seven- up but did not touch the Vodka the investigators report. The boys had nearly finished the bottle when the shooting occurred, according to the investigator's report. The group had reached the home about 10:30 p. m. Friday and watched TV for the greater part of the evening. About 1 a. m. Saturday, according to Burke, Bean had put his arm around Tommie Ann and asked if they couldn't get "better acquainted." The girls and Burke agree she told him she did not know him very well yet and moved over to another chair in the living room. It was then that Bean got up and went into the bedroom and called to Burke a few minutes later. Mr. and Mrs. Bean were on a deer hunting trip near Jackson and Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Brewer, 1200 Magnolia, aunt and uncle of the boy, left early Saturday for the Jackson area to notify the parents. Mrs. Bean had left Thursday night and Mr. Bean left home about 5 p. m. Friday to join her, they told the investigators. Burke said he and Bean had been working as welders in the Los Angles area and came up here early yesterday in Bean's pickup truck to see about a job in Stockton. He said he arranged for the double date and they had waited around Modesto until the girls were off work and then had all gone to the Bean home in the pickup. Burke said when Bean called him into the bedroom he had told him that no girl liked him with the possible exception of a friend in Patterson and that he was to take the truck and "get them out of here right now." Burke said it was following this statement that he told him he was going to shoot himself. Burke and the girls were horrified and first called the Tracy police, who, in turn, notified the San Joaquin Sheriff s office. The latter then called the Stanislaus Sheriff s office on the point-to-point radio. The ranch home lies just inside the Stanislaus County line but has a Tracy phone. When Burke picked up the phone he asked the operator for the "police department, he told the Stanislaus investigators. At the order of Mr. and Mrs. Brewer, the body was removed to the Salas Brothers-Moore Funeral Chapel in Modesto. Bean was a graduate of Patterson High School and the family had lived in the Vernalis area about five years. Funeral services were held at 3 p. m. Interment was at Cypress Lawn Cemetery in San Francisco with services conducted there Monday afternoon by Rev. Willeford. Evans Chapel made the funeral arrangements. Only members of the immediate family attended. Mrs Scanlon was born in Oakland December 31, 1870. With her family, Mr. and Mrs. A. D. Elfers, she first came to this area in 1872, when her parents homesteaded a piece of land in Salado Canyon. Soon after, the family purchased 160 acres on Elfers Ave., which was later given that name in memory of the A. D. Elfers. Shortly thereafter, another 160 acres was bought to complete the present 320 acre ranch. Mrs. Scanlon married Robert L. Totman in 1893, and, she and her husband lived in Newman. where their first two children, Frank and Howard, were born in 1897 and 1898. Then they moved to Fresno, where Dorothy was born in 1900 in Selma, seven miles away. Shortly thereafter, she and her husband separated and Mrs. Scanlon returned to Newman, where she took in washing to support her three children. In 1907, she became cook for Jack Scanlon. who supervised a crew of 30 to 40 sheep herders. When her father died in 1909, Mrs. Scanlon moved to the Scanlon Ranch on Elfers Ave. She remodeled it in 1911 and in 1912 she and Jack Scanlon were married and they made the ranch their permanent home. Jack Scanlon managed the ranch until 1944, when Howard Totman, Luther Christopherson and Justis Christopherson formed a partnership and began farming the 320 acres. They drilled wells and grew the first irrigated crops there. Later, when Harvey Hinman and Robert Christopherson returned from service, they joined the company. Mrs. Scanlon also operated a dairy. In 1911, when her three children were in school, their job was to raise heifers and sell them to the settlers. The dairy was used to provide milk for the immediate family. From 1933 to 1944, Howard Totmat and Mrs. Scanlon formed a partnership and ran the dairy, selling milk to Roy Smith who bottled it and sold it locally. The dairy was leased from 1914 to 1933, and from 1944 to the present. Mrs. Scanlon saw as many changes as a person could see in one lifetime. As a child she attended the old Bonita School that was located where the Crows Landing Air Base is now. She went the 3½ miles to school on horseback or on foot. There was no high school here then. Necessary supplies were purchased in Stockton in one or two annual trips. Bread didn t mean a quick trip to the bakery, and the family supplied its own meat, milk, butter, eggs, poultry, ham and bacon. Fruit canning was also done at home. As late as 1910 the view from the front porch of the Scanlon Ranch was practically unobstructed. Miles and miles of grain and barley were the only agricultural crops. In town, there was a grocery store where the Eagle Drug Store is now. The hotel and the post office in the Plaza Building were up, and there were stock loading pens where the Mehdelson-Zeller shed now stands. Only other building was the pumping station at the curve. Patterson s first airport was located on the Scanlon Ranch in 1945, and with the coming of the Central Valley Canal, she became a director of the Salado Water District. Mrs. Scanlon was probably best known for a heart bigger than her pocket book. She was a contributor to any worthy cause, and not just frequently but regularly. She sent over 1,000 packages of food and clothing overseas following the war, and as late as October of this year she had contributed to more than half a dozen charities. Because of Mrs. Scanlon s generosity to all charities, the family would like friends to contribute to any worthwhile charity in her memory.
