Vavrick William 791105 np Rough terrain roll-over takes life Saturday; Patterson - A roll-over of a four-wheel drive vehicle at the rough terrain area near Frank Raines Park in the Del Puerto Canyon claimed the life of an Antioch man Saturday afternoon. Dead is William Vavrick, 35, who suffered a broken neck and chest injuries. He was the driver of a Jeep that stalled near the top of a hill nearly 300 feet high. Vavrick attempted to back down the hill, but the front wheels turned on the wet and slippery surface, and the vehicle rolled over an estimated five to eight times to the bottom of the hill. Neither the driver nor his passenger, David Anders. 34, also of Antioch, were wearing seat belts. The vehicle was equipped with a roll bar. The Vavrick was thrown out of the vehicle near the bottom of the hill. The Patterson ambulance rushed to the scene, as did the Medi-Flight helicopter. Anders was treated at the Del Puerto Hospital and transferred to a Redwood City hospital. Vavrick William R 791122 p1 Rough terrain area provides thrills, chills - and tragedy; The air ambulance helicopter appeared out of the eastern clouds and before a stout man in a heavily emblemed orange windbreaker could yell "clear the lot," the whirring aircraft was circling its prepared landing spot. Finding a more advantageous site, the white bird whirled over and beyond a cluster of oaks and descended. On the ground, blocked from sight, by the trees, the paramedics administered cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and first-aid to William Ronald Vavrick and Duane Anders. The pair, from Antioch, lay on either side of a slightly mangled four-wheel-drive jeep which rested upright at the foot of a steep brick-colored hill. "Red Hill got another one," a park range cursed. It was the opening day of the season for the rough terrain area near Frank Raines Park, and despite the rain, the California Off-Road Vehicle Association was holding a jamboree at the site. Vavrick and Anders were attempting to climb a 300-foot muddy hill, and near the top their jeep inched to a halt as the engine bogged. They tried to back down the incline but the front wheels turned and the jeep rolled five to eight times before coming to rest near the bottom. Vavrick was thrown from his seat and died of a broken neck and chest injuries. Anders was treated at Del Puerto Hospital and transferred to Redwood city. property is designated as an off-road vehicle reserve for machines not registered for road use; Park Ranger Richard Lawrence estimated he has 40 rollovers reported to him a year. Last year, one fatality, along with six. confirmed hospitalizations. occurred. Lawrence speculated that most of the accidents involved inexperienced drivers, although he concedes that the sport is dangerous. CORVA member Bob Hum, in retrospect of the fatal accident. said four-wheel-drives have a high ground clearance and therefore a high center of gravity which, of course. "makes them, very susceptible to roll-overs. I wouldn't have tried that hill, even in my dune buggy. Northern area CORVA director Ray Bower added. "Most people who have just. bought their first four-wheeler don t realize their limitations. They watch a commercial on TV and think they can bust into Hell." The tragedy did not faze Bower or Hum s enthusiasm for their recreational outlet. "1 know how to handle my machine," Hum said as he took a healthy gulp from his beer cup and wiped the suds from his lips. It is the risk that makes the ORV sport attractive to many, according to Lawrence. "A certain Dr. Rosenthal once said, ‘the higher the risk the better the recreation, the ranger quoted. "At the end of the day you ll see a lot of people coming out of here with smiles on their face." One year; four people were killed trying to climb a bill in the park in a Ford Falcon station wagon. CORVA members, however, contend they are not a thrill seeking club, but rather are family oriented. "Many people will take any challenge put before them," Boyer said. "We warn people to stay off of the steeper hills, but we can t force anybody. What I like to do is go to Pismo Beach with my wife, and kids and sip beer and have a good time." The group, sponsored several events at the Del Puerto Jamboree including one called the "mouse chase." A blazer running the mouse chase course slid around a sharp corner on two wheels, the driver and passenger hollering above the whine of their engine. They finished the course and slid to a stop. "How close did we come to rolling it?" they laughed. "Pretty damn near," some bystanders cheered. Last year, more than 4,500 off-roaders used the park. Its open season runs from November through April and 20- plus ORV clubs from different parts of the state annually use the facilities. To accommodate this horde, the county employs only Lawrence, who also has the responsibilities for Frank Raines Park and the Minntiear campground. Lawrence said there are plans to install restroom and shower facilities at the ORV park and he hopes someday to repair some of its eroded areas. The erosion, he claims. is minimal due to light soakage qualities of the shale soil. The county set aside the reserve to divert off-roaders from devastating the entire Canyon. "It was ridiculous before the canyon was restricted," Lawrence recalled. "The canyon hillsides were being heavily damaged and a lot of private property was being destroyed." Finally the entire canyon was fenced off and public use was confined to the Frank Rabies vicinity. Not everyone was pleased with the site for the ORV park Joe Medeiros, Assistant Director of the Great Valley Museum, observed, "In terms of wasting a good environmental area, the Del Puerto was a poor choice." Medeiros favored a plot on Corral Hollow road, which was also considered by the county. Actually, many environmentalists would rather see ORVs denied any land whatsoever. Said Medeiros, "ORVs are one of the most heinous forms of recreation around. The whole syndrome is self-centered and has no thought; for tomorrow. It discourages people who merely enjoy the peace and quiet of nature... Mountains belong to us and future generations and I don t think anyone has the right to tear them up." CORVA is also interested in conserving land, but for public use. "We are conservationists - not preservationists who want to preserve public land for some unnamed future generation," Hum said.
