He ranched here until the time of his death. He also worked for 24 years at the Yancey Lumber Co. He was a member of Elijah B. Hayes Post, of the American Legion for about 65 years, having served in the United States Navy during World War I. Survivors include a sister, Sophie Barker of Fruitland, Idaho; a niece, Barbara Harvey of Patterson; two great-nieces, Marsha Rogers of Patterson and Karen Rogers of Mt. Shasta; two nephews, Bill Rogers of Modesto and Jim Rogers of Patterson; a great-nephew, Dan Rogers of San Diego; and many other nieces and nephews. He was born in 1893 in what was then Indian territory. When he was very young, his family moved to Crookston, Minn. He remembers that school was dismissed one day so that Crookston youngsters could watch the first horseless carriage to pass through town. He was preceded in death in May, 1981, by his wife Emily Rogers Hanson. Her family arrived here many years before the community of Patterson was founded, and she was born in 189? in a hospital in Centerville, now Fremont, because there were no medical facilities in this area. She then lived her entire life in the Patterson area. During a visit with the youngsters in his niece s fifth grade classroom four years ago, Hank Hanson gave his recollections of his early days in Patterson. He completed five years of schooling, then went to work on the family farm where he lived with his parents, three brothers and three sisters in a two-story log cabin. He told the youngsters he went to town only once a year, then to see the circus. His dream was to do the high dive into a water tank until he saw it done. Patterson had only a few hundred residents when Hanson arrived in 1912. "In those early days the streets would be so muddy that one could sink waist deep," he told the fifth graders. Because he was a farmer, he was not called into World War I. He enlisted, however, and served aboard the U.S.S. New Mexico as a gunner. Several years ago he received a plaque from the local American Legion post for his long membership. Stored in the barn near his home on Baldwin Avenue are mementos from the past, including an old Holt harvester formerly pulled by mules. In front of the house is a deteriorated Street car hauled many years ago from the Bay Area by his wife s mother. He worked on the Standard Oil pipeline, then in 1932 was employed by the county's probation department. That led to a new career of directing the operations of a minimum security camp for county prisoners in Del Puerto Canyon. At first the men were housed in tents while they worked on road improvements. The roadbed followed an abandoned railroad line, and soon it was made into a passable road. Under Minniear's direction, the camp later was used to house delinquent boys, the first of its kind in Stanislaus County and one of the first in the state. A rehabilitation program for adults was developed by the West Sider, and the inmates constructed their own facilities near the future site of Frank Raines Park. Morales Art III 850321 p1 Allergic reaction blamed in Navy medic's death; Navy medical officials say that an allergic reaction to a commonly used drug killed Art Morales III of Patterson. He died last Friday in a Texas military hospital after being treated for an ear infection. While aboard the USS Kitty Hawk docked in San Diego, Morales, 21, contracted an ear infection and was prescribed "Septra", a common anti-infective. According to Medical Officer Don Arthur, the drug caused an allergic reaction which developed into a toxic epidermal necrolysis, a condition in which the body essentially attacks itself. Morales reportedly died in less than 10 days. A mailgram from the Navy dated March 11 informed Morales' family in Grayson that the young seaman was "seriously ill" as a result of Steven Johnson Syndrome (another name for the disease) in a San Diego naval hospital. He was transferred to a skin treatment center at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas, where his condition worsened and he slipped into a coma. He was placed on a heart-lung machine which was disconnected Friday, his family said. The Navy is investigating Morales' death. Both the young man's Father, Manager said referring to the Art Morales Jr. Of Grayson, and his local physcian said that there was no record young; Morales had previously reacted to Septra, which is a double-sulfa drug. "Allergies to sulfa drugs are in general very common", said Dr. Peter La Torre, the Morales family physician. He speculated that three of every 20 people experience mild reactions to sulfa drugs, but perhaps only one in 100,000 react as severely as Morales. He added that Morales could have built up a sensitivity to the drug over time before suffering the severe reaction. Toxic epidermal necrolysis is a usually fatal condition in which the skin deteriorates and takes on the appearance of third degree burns. The loss of protective skin leaves the patient vulnerable to infection. Art Morales said his son, while on furlough last December, was prescribed a drug for ear infection at Rough and Ready Island in Stockton. He questioned whether a mixture of two drugs resulted in the syndrome. If the drug was Septra, it also could have built up a sensitivity to the drug with continued use, La Torre said. Upon being notified March 12 that Morales' condition was critical, the family left by car for San Antonio that evening. Stopping at a relative's home in Wilcox, Ariz., they were given a message that "Artie wouldn't make it." Perez Gregory 850530 np Local Youth Drowns at Laird Park; The Memorial Day scene was hauntingly calm Monday at Laird Park. Picnickers spread their holiday lunch on the sprawling lawn. Fishermen sat along the San Joaquin River with lines dangled lazily in the still water. Children searched for crawdads at the bottom of a spillway and a sandwich van circulated through the serene park attracting customers with a whistle that played a queer rendition of "When the Saints Go Marching In". In another group down by the water, Patterson High School students watched as County Sheriff skindivers pulled the body of 16-year old Gregory Perez from the river. The Patterson youth had drowned early Sunday evening after trying to swim across the river. "It s so dadgum deceiving out on top, the water looks like it's barely moving," said Deputy Hans Bosma of the Sheriff Department's Underwater Recovery Team. "Until you get into the middle of it you don t realize what the devil you re getting into." Two divers searched the murky waters until dark Sunday night and resumed diving Monday morning. At 1:30 p.m. they found Perez body 15 feet under at the bottom of a submerged ledge. Bosma said the current was strong in the channel where the body was found. At the park Sunday, Perez and four other Patterson youths decided to swim to the opposite bank. The water at that section of the river is wading depth until it drops off into the channel more than halfway across. Four of the young men swam across and were going to swim back but Danny Castillo, a student at Patterson High School, was worried because he d had trouble getting across. "I told him don t worry, me and Greg will help you," said Elias Sanchez, 24, of Patterson. He related this account. Castillo jumped back in and was immediately taken by the current. Sanchez said he swam to Castillo and aided him back across the channel to the shallow water. But then Perez began to call for help, Sanchez said he tried to rescue Perez but by then was fatigued, and Perez wasn t helping. "He must have went into shock," Sanchez said. "I had told Danny ‘you have to help me swim, "but Perez had become immobile. Sanchez said he pulled Perez near the shore three times, but the current kept drawing Perez back. "On the third try I could touch the bottom and I pushed him in front of me really hard and hoped he would stand up." Sanchez fell back and went under, and when he surfaced couldn t see Perez. On the last attempt, Sanchez said he'd really been taken under, and "that s when I got scared and started fighting for my own life." Sanchez, another friend George Rodriguez and a man downstream went back into the water to locate Perez, but didn t find him. Firemen from the Westport Fire Department were called to the park. The Medi.Flight helicopter from Modesto circled over the river trying to locate Perez. But he didn t surface. Modesto-Ceres Ambulance transported Castillo to Del Puerto Hospital in Patterson where he was hospitalized and treated for hysteria. Monday, Dan Perez, the drowning victim s father, identified his son's body at Laird Park. Although the river looks shallow and calm, signs at the park warn against swimming. The San Joaquin has always been notorious for changing currents, whirlpools, and dangerous holes. A rosary for Perez will be recited Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church.
