Hagins Jack D 921029 p1 Teacher Killed in Head-On Collision: Jack D Hagins; Jack Dolton Hagins, a Modesto resident and special education teacher at Patterson Junior High, was killed Tuesday morning in a head-on collision with a car that had been weaving on the roadway, CHP said. Hagins. 58, was driving to work at 7:15 a.m. when the accident occurred on West Main one mile east of Jennings Road. The eastbound Nissan Maxima driven by Gurdial Singh Moundi, 35, of Modesto entered the path of Hagins' 1985 Mazda. Both vehicles were demolished. Hagins' car was catapulted a few feet into the air and landed on its roof alongside the roadway. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Moundi suffered head and internal injuries and a broken right leg. He was taken by Medi-Flight to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto where he was in a critical but stabilizing condition Wednesday. Emergency crews detoured traffic at Jennings and Carpenter roads for two hours while the scene was investigated and the roadway cleared. Rosemarie Scoles of Patterson said Hagins had passed her moments before the accident and she was driving 100 feet behind him. The errant car moved in a pack of 10 to 11 eastbound vehicles Scoles said she sas the car's headlights as it appeared to begin to pass another vehicle. The car moved back into the eastbound lane, drifted to the far shoulder and spun out of control. It crossed the center line and made a full spin before the collision, Scoles said. Hagins had no chance to evade the wreck, she said. Able to escape harm, the Patterson woman stopped and tried to offer assistance to the drivers. She said Hagins was pinned in his car, and she and a Patterson teacher who also stopped were unable to administer CPR. "I told him hang on, and to give me a sign if he could hear me," Scoles said. "He did give me a sign by moving his arm and that was it." A passerby called 911 from a mobile phone. It was reported that the accident might have been alcohol related, but CHP has yet to determine why Moundi's car went out of control. 'The only thing that we know is that there was a bottle of some type of liquor in the trunk of the (Nissan Maxima)," said Officer John Brugger of the Modesto CHP office. "We are investigating the possibility of intoxication. We don't have any hard evidence that anyone was under the influence and we won't know for a couple of weeks (when a blood analysis is completed)." Scoles said that in trying to revive Moundi, who was slumped behind the steering wheel, she did not smell alcohol. Scoles said that a woman who stopped after the wreck told her, she had traveled behind the car for several miles and noticed the driver had been nodding. Brugger said he didn't know how long Moundi had been driving. Administrators. teachers and students at Patterson Junior High were stunned at learning of Hagins' death shortly after morning classes began. Principal Ron Hartman said colleagues were notified individually and a counselor met with Hagins' 20 students. Hartman said counselors would be available to help students deal with the tragedy, if needed. Hagins had worked 23 years for Patterson Unified School District and was current president of the Patterson Teachers Association. As grievance and negotiating chairman, he served as a teachers' advocate and earned respect on both sides of the bargaining table by humanizing negotiations and striving to get things accomplished. Hartman said. 'There is no question I will miss Jack on both a professional and personal basis," the principal said. "I respected him very much." Carol Iriart, a close friend who recently succeeded Hagins as negotiating chairperson, took the day off upon receiving the tragic news. She said fellow teachers were emotionally distraught. Many who live out of town take the same route to work each morning. "A lot of the teachers saw the accident scene and didn't realize it was him," she said. "When something like this happens you can't concentrate on what you are doing in the classroom." I have just been devastated, she added. "He had been with the district a very long time." Besides his 14 years with PTA, Hagins' work in the classroom was highly regarded by peers. "He was an excellent teacher," Iriart said. "He taught the special day class. It takes a strong person to do that for so long. ...He was devoted to his family, his church, and the teachers association. It will be a loss to all the community, not just to the school." Hagins leaves his wife, Janice, and three grown children. Though the teacher did not reside in Patterson, his was a familiar face in the community. Scoles recalls him taking tickets at the door at school athletic events. She had driven her husband to work at Procter & Gamble Tuesday morning accompanied by her 8-year-old son. She recognized the ///// they came to a stop at the intersection of Carpenter and West Main. "He looked at me and I looked at him," she said. "He looked like he was in a hurry but let me go first." "It's so senseless," she continued. "It's a life gone. I'm just so upset about it, because it wasn't his fault. It could have been my child and I." Funeral services are set for Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church in Modesto and will conclude at the church. Burial will be private. In a preliminary hearing Thursday, Judge James Barakatt determined that Castaneda should stand trial for the Nov. 7 shooting which occurred near Turlock's Columbia Park. Police say Castaneda and Singh were members of respective Patterson, and Turlock youth gangs which fought over turf that day. Singh was shot at 10 p.m. with a 25-caliber handgun and died the following day from a single head wound. Police issued an arrest warrant for Castaneda Nov. 14. The suspect, who had fled the area, remained at-large for nearly five months before turning himself in at the Patterson Police Station April 9. He pleaded not guilty in Municipal court and bail was set at $200,000. The Stanislaus county District Attorney's office has not decided what penalty to seek. At least four persons claim they witnessed the shooting and identify Castaneda as the gunman. Steven Vigil and Estella Hermosillo were riding in a car westbound behind a maroon and grey Pontiac Bonneville that was traveling 5 to 10 mph on Vermont Avenue. Vigil said that as the car came up to the West Avenue intersection, it pulled to the right side and Vigil stopped parallel. Vigil said the lone Hispanic driver, whom he described as 5-8, 210 pounds with dark hair slicked back, called out the open window, "What's up with Turlock?" Vigil said he answered, "What do you mean, what's up with Turlock?" He said the driver, with left hand on the steering wheel and right hand obscured from view, raised a chrome colored hand-gun across his chest and rested the barrel on. the driver's door. Vigil quoted his, girlfriend as saying, "I'm not going to get shot for this" At her urging, he turned onto West Avenue and then pulled a U-turn. Vigil said as he approached the intersection again he saw the car had crossed West Avenue and was stopped along with a white Buick Regal driven by George Padilla; a friend. Singh and another passenger in Papilla's car, Rolando Lopez, had gotten out and were standing around the Pontiac. Vigil said he heard two shots and saw Singh fall to the pavement. The Pontiac sped away. Padilla followed the vehicle as it raced through a stop light on West Main and turned onto the northbound on-ramp of High-way 99. The Pontiac proceeded north about a mile and then turned off at the Fulkerth exit. Padilla said that as he drove up, he saw the Pontiac stopped on the off ramp. The driver got out and walked back toward him, Padilla said, so he drove past and turned onto Fulkerth. Padilla said he resumed the chase after he saw in the rear view mirror the Pontiac proceed northbound on Highway 99. The Pontiac took the Taylor Avenue exit and sped south on Golden State Boulevard before Padilla gave up and returned to the shooting scene. An autopsy was pending Monday for Jacinta Sousa, 26, who was riding with Silva on the east side of the canal north of Needham Road some time before midnight. According to California Highway Patrol, Silva was driving a white Mercury Cougar northbound at 40 to 50 mph when for unknown reasons he lost control of the vehicle. The car slid side- ways, left the west side of the roadway and hit a concrete irrigation box. The vehicle continued down the embankment. struck a metal pipe and went into the canal. According to CHP, Silva was able to escape from the left driver's window and swim to the bank. Sousa was unable to escape from the car. Divers with the Stanislaus County Sheriff`s Department recovered the vehicle and the body early Sunday morning. From preliminary evidence it appeared that Sousa died from drowning, not injuries from the wreck, CHP reported. After swimming to the bank, Silva climbed up the embankment and went on foot two and half miles to a gas station on Howard Road near 1-5, CHP reported. From there, he telephoned his father, who drove to the service station and picked up his son and drove him home. The father called 911, CHP said. James Silva changed his clothes then the two drove to the intersection of Howard Road and the Delta-Mendota Canal and directed emergency crews to the accident scene. The Patterson ambulance service received the dispatch at 12:50 a.m., at least an hour after the car was believed to have gone into the canal. Silva was arrested at the scene, and faulted for failing to render aid to the victim and failure to call 911 immediately, according to the CHP report. Ramiro Torres, 38, died when he came into contact with a downed power line following a vehicle accident near the Gnesa Ranch shop. Torres, on a service call around 6:50 p.m., was driving west on a private road that runs between West Stanislaus and Howard roads near the Delta-Mendota Canal. For unknown reason, Torres lost control of the service truck and ran into a power pole, knocking three high-tension wires down. The vehicle continued for 20 feet into an apricot orchard, struck a tree and stopped. Torres got out of the truck and walked back toward the road. According to CHP, he touched a power line and received an electrical shock. Among the first to arrive at the scene was Michael Lara, captain of Westley Fire Department. He said the wires were sagging about two feet from the ground and Torres lay underneath. Firemen used poles with hooks to pull the man free and then started CPR. "There was no pulse and he wasn't breathing," Lara said. Two employees at the nearby shop told firemen they saw Torres grab the wire with his hand. It is speculated that Torres may have been dazed and attempted to move the wires from his path. Lara said a Pacific Gas and Electric repairman responded and determined that two of the wires had apparently slapped together in the air, tripping the circuit. "There was only one wire alive and Torres happened to grab it." Lara said.
