According to Linda Piarce, secretary for the Stanislaus County Sheriff s Department, it is believed the two men are Mario Calbillo, 23, and Juan Jose Escalante, 33, both of Patterson. She said that they were tentatively identified by family members descriptions and property owned by the men. There were also witnesses that saw them in the vehicle before the accident, she said. Autopsy reports are still being conducted and are projected to take about four to six weeks to complete," Piarce said. The autopsy started the day after the accident. A report from the California Highway Patrol says the car believed to have belonged to Calbillo and Escalante was a 1989 Dodge Diplomat. They were driving north on 1-5 at high speeds, and it appears that the driver lost control of the car and went off the freeway and rolled down an embankment, about one mile south of Sperry Avenue. Fire quickly engulfed the car, as the two men were trapped inside. No other vehicles were involved in the accident. The Dodge Diplomat is believed to have been once the property of the city of Patterson, used by the Patterson Police Department. The vehicle was given to Del Puerto Hospital in the early l990s. Recently, the vehicle was advertised in the Irrigator to be sold, and was sold to a private party. Katie Carlock, deputy for the coroner s office, is working on the case; the results of the autopsy are tentatively set by the middle of next month. Glover Jammie C 010712 p1 Patterson Man Dies in Crash with Truck; A Monday night crash that occurred just south of the Sperry Avenue exit on Interstate 5 claimed the life of a Patterson man. According to California Highway Patrol Spokesman Tom Killian, Jimmie Carnell Glover, 41, of Patterson was driving his 2000 Chevrolet Tahoe sport utility vehicle on I-5 shortly after midnight, headed southbound. He passed the Sperry Avenue exit and was driving at an unknown high rate of speed in the fast lane when his vehicle drifted into the center divider. He apparently pulled back, then overcorrected to the left. That is when he drifted into the center median which is downward slope toward the northbound lanes. "That is when the vehicle started flipping," Kiltian said. Many flips: The vehicle flipped many times into the northbound lanes and finally rested on the embankment of the highway. Edward Ellis, 52, of Compton was driving a 1988 Peterbuilt tractor-trailer rig in the northbound lanes. As he witnessed the Tahoe vehicle flipping down the side of the highway, Ellis felt an unknown object hit his vehicle. Ellis then realized that he was losing an extensive amount of diesel fuel from his truck, and be pulled off to the side and went back down the road, where he discovered he was leaking diesel fuel. When he got back to where the diesel had started to leak, he also discovered Glover s body. After authorities were notified, northbound I-5 was shutdown for about five hours to clean up an estimated 75 gallons of diesel fuel. Killian said that the investigating officer discovered the back of the seat of the Tahoe vehicle was broken, but it was undetermined as of Wednesday morning if the seat belt may have been worn incorrectly or if the seat was faulty. Ineffective: "The seat belt becomes ineffective if the back of the seat is broken," Killian said. Though it was confirmed Glover lived in Patterson, there was evidence that he had lived in Hayward and it was undetermined on how long he may have been living in here. Killian indicated that CHP officers did notify his next of kin, his wife, Letricia Williams, and his three daughters. Linda Piearce, secretary for the Stanislaus County Coroner s office, said that the cause of Glover s death was multiple blunt injuries. See inside for full obituary. According to California Highway Patrol Sgt. Chris Mahnke of the Modesto division office, Andres Arriola, 16, of Patterson was driving a 2001 Ford Ranger truck headed southbound on the highway just south of Fruit Avenue at around 12:30 p.m. At the same time, another vehicle, a 1986 Ford Taurus, and its four occupants was headed northbound on Highway 33. It appeared Arriola reached over to turn on the truck s air conditioner and took his eyes off the road. Arriola's truck went over the center divider into the northbound lane. During that same time, Pedro Villanueva, 36, of Newman, who was driving the Ford Taurus, noticed Arriola s truck coming toward him and moved to the left side of the road to avoid a collision. Then Arriola looked up and saw the incoming Ford Taurus, and swerved in the same direction. That was when the vehicles collided in the southbound lane. "The left side tires straddled the center line and the other driver,Villanueva, saw the first driver," Malinke said. "So he had to take action." Arriola complained of pain, which may have been caused by the seat belt and air bag, according to Mahnke. The teenager was taken to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto for treatment and released. Villanueva also suffered minor injuries; he was taken to Emanuel Medical Center in Turlock for treatment and also released. Three passengers in Villanueva s car were killed: Javier Martinez, 38. Jose Villanueva, 19, and Luis Villanueva, 7, all of Newman. Mahnke said that three of the four occupants in. the Ford Taurus were wearing seat belts while the other was not, and two of the three people killed had seat belts on. It was not known as of Sunday afternoon if the person that did not have a seat belt on was ejected from the Ford Taurus. Arriola was driving at approximately 55 mph, which is the speed limit on Highway 33, while Villanueva was going 50 mph. There were no signs of alcohol or drugs on either driver. Montelongo Mary EA 011023 p1 Local Woman Killed in Highway 33 Accident; An accident early Friday morning on Highway 33 in Westley claimed the life of a local woman who was a passenger in car driven by her sister. According to California Highway Patrol accident review investigation officer Don Davis, Mary Ellen Armenta Montelongo, 36, of Patterson, died of injuries sustained in the accident. She and her younger sister, driver Rosemary Armenta, 34, were in a 1999 Ford Escort sedan and headed northbound on Highway 33, approximately one half mile from Rogers Road at 4:33 a.m. Vehicle drifted: For reasons unknown, Davis said, the vehicle drifted across the southbound lanes of Highway 33 and onto the west shoulder of the southbound lane. The vehicle traveled back to the roadway and swerved to the left side of the road. Then the car started to rotate in a counterclockwise direction. "It was skidding sideways until it hit the west shoulder," said Davis of Highway 33. Then the Escort sedan went in the direction of a house owned by Alex Florez, who lives at 10207 Highway 33. The vehicle struck the front end of what is described as a decorative abutment, which flanks Florez s driveway. Hit abutments, sign: Rosemary Armenta hit both abutments, as well as a private stop sign on Florez s property. The second hit had what Davis called a "very significant impact." Said the officer, "The vehicle overturned in hitting the second one (abutment)." Both women were wearing seat belts, according to the report Davis had in his possession yesterday morning, Monday. There were no signs of alcohol or any type of drugs in or around the Escort. No other vehicles were involved in the accident. Sutherland Robert 010724 p1 A Pine Box Fulfills Last Wish of a Patterson Man; by George Loewen Patterson Irrigator News Reporter Robert Sutherland always wanted to be buried in a pine box and his family wasn t about to let him down. He was laid to rest last week in the Winton Cemetery in a homemade pine coffin. It was right out of an old western, the kind he loved. "He wanted to be buried in a pine box," his daughter, Shirley Trio, said. "He was a big fan of Gunsmoke, the old TV series. Even as a kid, he said, ‘I want to be buried in a coffin like that on Gunsmoke. His dying wish was to have his sons and grandsons build him a coffin like those on Gunsmoke. It may have seemed like a crazy idea to family members, and they say they ve heard a lot of them. But no matter how offbeat or implausible they were, Sutherland s wishes were always carried out. "Everything he wanted, we carried out," Trio said. "Right down to the red suit he wore at Christmas. Red was his favorite color." For his burial, Sutherland was dressed in the red suit. With his boots on, as if he was ready to line dance with the angels. He also wanted everyone in red, his favorite color, instead of the traditional black or somber tones. He would always say ‘I don t care what anyone says. That s what I want done. So we did it, Jackie Basaldua, one of his granddaughters said. "Because Grandpa was so adamant, we were so adamant. That s how we got it done." Trio, who flew in from St. Louis on Wednesday; Basaldua; Dawn Buhler, another granddaughter; Mike Buhler. a grandson; and Domingo Basaldua, a friend of Sutherland s took about a day to build the coffin. They ended up with a diamond-shaped coffin, like in the Wild West. The wood was sanded and stained. No frills: The inside was lined with padding and a mattress. There s a pillow to rest Sutherland s head on. Other than that, there are no frills. "He was a simple man. He didn t want anything fancy," Dawn Buhler said. Including the wood and padding, the coffin cost about $150 to build, Trio said. That reduced the overall cost of the funeral, as most coffins these days go for $4,000 or more. Family members don t want to be burdened with the cost of a new coffin, on top of dealing with the loss of a loved one. "Anyone can do this. The only rules are a person can t be cramped. He has to be relaxed," Trio said. "There can be any type of padding. It can t have any rough edges." It also has to be watertight and have seal locks. The finished coffin measured 78 inches long by 22 inches wide and 20 inches deep. Sutherland was less than six feet tall. "There were no objections from the funeral home or the cemetery," Trio said. "Just as long as he s comfortable and not cramped." Cowboy boots: The coffin was taken to the funeral home in Merced on Thursday in the back of a pickup. Sutherland was then dressed in his cowboy boots and red suit and placed in his coffin. a reminder of what he had on earth. He was buried among his loved ones in the Winton Cemetery on Friday. It was an open casket service. "Most people do what they want when someone dies, not what the dying person wants." Trio said. "I don t know why more people don t do this. Sutherland died on Tuesday. The construction of his desired resting place began at about 6 am. Wednesday and got done at about 1 a.m. Thursday. "A lot of people came up to us on their evening walks and wondered. what we were doing," Trio said. Family members were just sending a little part of them selves with their father and grandfather. Picture of coffin with the following captain next to the article: Daughters, granddaughters, grandsons and friends helped build this coffin for Robert Sutherland, who died last week. Completing the project were left to right: Jackie Basaldua, granddaughter; Shirley Trio, daughter; Dawn Buhler, granddaughter; Domingo Basaldua, friend: and Mike Buhler, grandson. Sutherland's last wish was to have his sons and grandsons build him a coffin like those on Gunsmoke. It was completed the day before his funeral. Mahnke said the accident is still under investigation.
