Markham Succumbs Former Governor of State, Civil War Veteran and Civic Leader Dies in Pasadena of Apoplexy PASADENA October 9 - Henry Harrison Markham, former Governor of California, died this morning at his home, 763 South Pasadena avenue, following a sudden stroke of apoplexy. When Mr. Markham retired in the evening he was in the best of spirits. This morning he was dead. The death of this pioneer of Pasadena and California concludes a life spent almost entirely in the development and civic activities of the State. He would have been 83 years of age on November 16. For the past forty years he has made his home in Pasadena. Mr. Markham came to California from Milwaukee, Wis, and becoming interested in the early development of the State, served as Governor from 1891 to 1895. Prior to serving as chief executive of the State, Mr. Markham was a member of the Forty-ninth Congress, representing the Sixth District. At that time a Republican Club was formed in Los Angeles, and after a heated political contest, he was finally chosen Representative. Was Civic Leader Just last Sunday Mr. Markham attended services at the Neighborhood Church, greeting his many friends with his usual cordiality. Despite his advanced age he took keen interest in civic affairs and was one of the leading figures in this city. According to Dr. Walter Nichols, Mr. Markham's physician, the former Governor wokeup at an early hour this morning and complained of a pain in his side. Before medical assistance could be summoned he was dead. Although the shock of his death was very great to Mrs. Markham, she is bearing her sorrow bravely. Mrs. Markham is also well advanced in years. Mr. Markham was one of the most picturesque members of the Grand Army of the Republic, having served with Gen. Sherman on the famous march to the sea. He was severely wounded in a battle of Whippy Swamp in 1865. For more than twenty years he had been a member of the board of managers of the Soldiers' Home at Sawtelle and was always greatly concerned with the welfare of the inhabitants of the home. He often visited his former comrades. He was also prominent in the Masonic Lodge, having attained his thirty-second Degree. He was also a faithful member of the Neighborhood Church congregation. Henry Harrison Markham was born in Wilmington, N.Y., on November 16, 1840, the son of Nathan B. and Susan Markham. He was educated in the public and private schools of New York. For some time he worked on a farm and later moved to Wisconsin. He was married May 17, 1876, to Mary A Dana at Waukesha, Wis. Following his marriage he practiced law in both Milwaukee and California. Surviving the former Governor are his widow, Mrs. Mary Markham, and four daughters all of whom live in Pasadena. They are Mrs. Benjamin Page, 915 South Orange Grove avenue; Mrs. Donald West, Santa Anita Boulevard; Miss Gertrude Markham and Miss Alice Markham, residing at the family residence. Funeral services will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Neighborhood Church. Burial will be at the Mountain View Cemetery. Rev. John Murdock, former pastor of the Neighborhood Church, will officiate at the service. Ives & Warren are in charge of the funeral arrangements.
