Appeal Democrat May 16, 1987 pg A-9 Funeral services are scheduled Monday at 10 am at Lipp & Sullivan Chapel for Hazel S McRae, 99, of Marysville, who died May 14, 1987 at Hillhaven Convalescent Hospital. She was a lifelong resident of the Yuba_sutter area and was the last of 11 children born to a prominent pioneer family in the area. She was born on the family ranch near Honcut, her father, Joseph Brown as a boy in 1849 crossed the plains with his family in a covered wagon. her mother Melissa Sadorus Brown was born in Old Town, San Diego in 1850. Her family moved to Yuba County in 1851. Melissa Sadorus and Joseph brown were married at the old Bryden ranch in Yuba County in 1869 -later going to Nevada where he was engaged in the stock business. Later they located at the Olive Hill colony in the vicinity now known as Iowa City coming to Marysville in later years. Hazel Brown McRae graduated from Marysville High School in June 1909 in a class of 19. She was the widow of the late J. W. McRae who died Dec 1, 1973. He was prominent in music circles in the community leader of the old- time Marysville City Band and also taught at both Yuba College and Yuba City High School for many years. Mrs McRae was a member of the Wednesday Club, The Seminar, Eastern Star, the Riding Club, Yuba County Republican Women and Mercy Guild. She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church. She is survived by two nieces, Mrs J.P. Murphy of Sacramento and Mrs Josephine E Tompkins of Marysville; and a great nephew, Robert Gengler of Yuba City. Memorials to St John's Episcopal Church or a favorite charity have been suggested by the family. The Rev Gary Adams of St. John's Episcopal Church will officiate at the funeral service. Burial will be at the Old Yuba City cemetery.
