Appeal Democrat March 11, 1964 Attorney Alvin Weis Succumbs Well - known attorney George Alvin Weis of Yuba City collapsed and died last night apparently of a heart attack. He was 72 years old. Weis, an attorney since 1921. collapsed while playing cards with friends at Hotel Marysville. he died at Rideout Memorial Hospital about 6:45 pm. He had been under treatment for a heart ailment. A native of the Cranmore District, he had been a lifetime resident of Sutter county. He made his home at 1035 Marcia Ave. During the 1920's he was a partner with Victor M. Cassidy of Yuba City in the Appeal newspaper. Active Mason He was a past exalted ruler of the Marysville Lodge of Elks and was active in Masonic affairs. He was a member of Enterprise Lodge 70 F & AM of Yuba City, Royal Arch Masons 13 of Marysville, Ben Ali Temple of the Shrine of Sacramento and Fidelia Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star of Yuba City. He is survived by his wife, Winnifred, of Yuba City; three sons, Mills of Marysville, Warren of Palo Alto and Leland of Daly City and by four grandchildren. Funeral services are scheduled Saturday at 10 am at Ullrey Memorial Chapel with Rev. Edgar Nelson of the Yuba City First Methodist Church and officials of Enterprise Lodge officiating. Interment will be in Meridian Cemetery. Memorials to Rideout Hospital have been suggested. Appeal Democrat Friday, March 13, 1964 Pg 12 Eulogy for late Attorney Sutter County Superior Court Judge John Hauck adjourned the morning court calendar today in memory of Atty Alvin Weis, 72, who died Wednesday. Atty. E T Manwell, on behalf of the bar association, moved to have the session adjourned in honor of Weis, an attorney for 43 years. Manwell said there was no finer "gentleman in the local and state courts" and that Weis was the "highest type practitonier" as an attorney. "The state lost one of its most respected attorneys," Manwell said. Manwell, as resident of the Yuba - Sutter Bar Association, said tribute will be paid Weis in Yuba County Superior Court. Heart Attack Weis died at Rideout Hospital after suffering an apparent heart attack in Hotel Marysville. He was a member of the Rideout Hospital board of trustees from June 1927 to April 1958 and for nearly 20 years served as president of the board. Weis and William Rich were the original partners in the Marysville law firm of Rich, Fuidge, Dawson, Marsh, Tweedy and Morris. Weis left the firm in 1950 to set up his own offices in Yuba City. He served a term on the Board of Governors of the California Bar Association. He also served as Clerk for the County of Sutter from 1915 - 1918. He resigned the position before the four year term expired.
