Evans Local Barber Kills Himself Earl Maxwell (Squirrely) Evans, who has operated the barber shop in the Tremont Hotel here for the past 32 years, took his own life with a gun yesterday evening in his home at 905 Monroe Street, City Police said today. Evans, who was found unconscious by his father shortly after 6 o’clock, was 51. Police said the victim committed suicide by shooting himself in the head with a .22 caliber automatic. Officers said Evans had been despondent over ill health for quite some time and had told members of his family that he intended to take his own life. The victim shot himself a few minutes after 6 o’clock, police said, and died at a local hospital about 6:30. Andy Gow, manager of the Tremont Hotel said Evans had been the barber there “for as long as I can remember and his father before him.” Evans was born Sept. 17, 1907, in Red Bluff where he attended school and where he was a barber for 32 years. He is survived by two daughters, Sharon Crane and Avone Stoops, both of Corning, his father Tom Evans of Red Bluff, and five grandchildren. Services are pending at Fickert’s Chapel.
