Graveside services will be help at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Forest View Cemetery in Nevada City, where he had lived before moving to San Jose in May. Born in Mineral Sept 1, 1898, he was the son of Bert and Julia Hampton, founders of Mineral and operators of its first post office and store. Mr. Hampton lived in Mineral until the late 1940s. A Lassen Park employee, he helped build the trail up Mt. Lassen and also worked for other public agencies. On Sept 1, 1978, he celebrated his 80th birthday by climbing Mt. Lassen in three hours, 10 minutes, accompanied by family members and Ben Webster of Red Bluff, then an employee of the Daily News. Mr. Hampton said he had first climbed the mountain in 1910, and also observed the eruption of Lassen in 1915, according to a story written by Webster, which appeared in the Daily News on Sept 5, 1978. Survivors are one son, Gerald Hampton of Red Bluff; a daughter, Patricia Dormandy; and 11 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alma Apple Hampton, in the 1970s, and a son, Jack Hampton, who died in an air crash in Spain during the Korean War. Additional Comments: Comments by Granddaughter Patrica Hampton Kinzie: her father, Jack Hampton died in Turkey on 19 Jan 1960 while stationed in Spain with the US Navy (not the Korean War). In addition, his first wife and mother of his children was Hazel Mildred Woodward Hampton. Alma Eloice Gall Apple was his second wife, a widow of Amos Crowder Apple.
