Balaam At Local Church Exeterite Dies In Delano Hospital Following Auto Accident Funeral services for A. S. Balaam [Albert Swain Balaam] were conducted at the Exeter Baptist church at nine o’clock Sunday morning [August 18] with Rev. J. E. Rector officiating assisted by Rev. W. M. McClearen. A quartet including John Wright, Haven Way and R. D. and A. B. Sellars sang two selections and Mrs. Roy Foster played several numbers on the pipe organ. Burial was made in the Exeter cemetery. Mr. Balaam passed away in the Delano Emergency hospital at 4:30 o’clock Friday afternoon [August 16] following an auto accident on Sunday, August 11, when he received a fracture of the skull. The accident occurred at McFarland when he was returning to Exeter with his family and other relatives after spending some time in Pismo for his health, having been ill for about three months. The Balaam party had stopped in the small city of McFarland and when Mr. Balaam attempted to cross the street was struck by an automobile driven by W. I. Williams, of Oil Center. The front of the car crashed into Mr. Balaam and threw him onto the hood of the auto and finally threw him against the pavement after carrying him approximately sixty feet causing the fracture of his skull. The deceased, who was born in this district April 15, 1867, was a member of one of the pioneer families of the Exeter district, his father, Edward Balaam, who settled here in the sixties, being one of Exeter’s first merchants. Mr. Balaam resided in or near Exeter during his lifetime and bought and developed a forty-acre tract of land south of Exeter where he made his home, and afterward purchased another forty already developed. He was a hard working man who had just reached the point where he might have reaped the reward of his labors in easy circumstances. During his long life in this community he had made a host of friends to whom the sad ending of his life was a deep shock. Being interested and active in the grape industry in this district, Mr. Balaam became chairman of the executive committee of the Sun-Maid Raisin Growers’ association in the Exeter district. He was also a member of the Exeter lodge of Woodmen of the World. Those surviving are: his wife, four children, [Orlando] Clayton Balaam, of Tulare, [Herbert] Austin Balaam, who has a ranch near Exeter, Mrs. Dewey Carter [Lola Estelle Balaam] and Mrs. Alstyne Pruner [Helen Claudine Balaam], of this city; his mother who lives in Hollywood; two brothers, Walter Balaam, of Redondo Beach, and Fred Balaam, of Morro Beach, and a sister, Mrs. W. G. Davis, of Porterville. An inquests [sic] was conducted at Delano at 1:30 Monday afternoon by Coroner Thomas Haus and the verdict showed that death of Mr. Balaam was accidental.” END Additional Comments: Unknown newspaper, August 22, 1929 (Thursday) File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/ca/tulare/obits/b/balaam3615gob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/cafiles/ File size: 3.5 Kb
