Born in Marysville [Yuba county, California] on April 22, 1853, she came to what is now the Farmersville district with her parents when she was a child of four years. There her father Cypron Bequette, acquired extensive holdings on a grant signed by President Abraham Lincoln, which have remained in the possession of his descendants since his death. She was married to Alfred Balaam, also a member of a pioneer family which came to this section with the first white men to enter the valley. Mr. Balaam became prominent as a rancher of that section, and later moved to Visalia when he was appointed deputy sheriff. Following a term under Sheriff Wells, Mr. Balaam became sheriff himself, occupying that office for one term, after which he returned to the Farmersville district to resume his ranching activities. Mrs. Balaam leaves a wide circle of friends throughout the valley to mourn her death. She is particularly well known in Tulare county by reason of her long residence here and the part the family has taken in county affairs. Surviving her are one daughter, Mrs. Ida B. Higdon of Buttonwillow; three sons, Carl Balaam and Edward Balaam of Farmersville and Charles Balaam of Exeter, and several grandchildren, including Alfred Higdon, Marium Aldyne Higdon and Veda May Balaam. Funeral services will be conducted from the Hadley Funeral Parlors at 2 o’clock tomorrow [October 21] afternoon. Rev. W. M. McClearen of Exeter will officiate. Mrs. Balaam will be buried in the Exeter cemetery at the side of her husband, who died in 1919.” END Additional Comments: Unknown newspaper, October 20, 1930 (Monday)Copy of obituary clipping obtained from the Sequoia Genealogical Society, Tulare, California.
