July 30. (VNS) – Fred Balaam [Charles Frederick Balaam], 59, of Berkeley, a native of Tulare county and formerly a prominent business man of Exeter, died yesterday [July 29, 1936] in the bay city as result of a stroke of paralysis. He had been ill for two years. The deceased was preceded in death by his wife, Gwynedde Balaam, two months ago. A native of Tulare county, he was born in the Farmersville district. Balaam attended the Visalia high school and was later graduated from the University of California. With his father, he late E[dwin] S[wain]. Balaam, he conducted one of the first grocery stores in Exeter. He was located at the corner of Pine and H streets. Later he sold the business and entered the real estate and insurance business. He was associated with C. A. Beinhorn for many years. Fifteen years ago he left Exeter to make his home in Berkeley. Balaam built the large residence on Crespi avenue which is now the Exeter hospital. The building was for many years the family home. At one time Balaam owned considerable business property in Exeter. Survivors include three sons. Carmall Balaam of San Francisco and Norman and Bobbie Balaam of Berkeley; a sister, Mrs. Bid Davis of Exeter; a brother, Walter Jerome Balaam of Redondo [Beach]; two pieces [nieces], Mrs. S. B. Sherman and Mrs. Eunice Phipps of Visalia; two cousins, H.C. Balaam and Mrs. Francis McNees of Exeter and a sister-in-law, Mrs. B ?
