Balaam, pioneer resident of the Farmersville section, passed away at his home yesterday [January 17, 1919]. The deceased was born in Louisville, Kentucky, September 5, 1839. In 1853, at the age of 14, he crossed the plains to California and four years later came to Tulare county, where he resided until his death. Mr. Balaam was associated in county politics and at the time of his death held the position of road over-seer of District No. 2, one he had held for many years. He was deputy sheriff under Largent Wells and in 1885 was elected to the office of sheriff, which he occupied for one term. The deceased is survived by his widow, one daughter, Mrs. J. J. Higdon, of Tulare; three sons, C. W. Balaam [Charles Wesley Balaam] of Tulare, and Carl and Ed Balaam of Farmersville, and a number of grandchildren who reside in Exeter. Funeral services will be held from the late residence tomorrow morning [January 19] at 10 o’clock, interment being in the Exeter cemetery. – Saturday Times.” END [Apparently published on January 18 in the “Saturday Times” and then copied by the unknown newspaper that published it on January 23.] Additional Comments: Unknown newspaper, January 23, 1919 (Thursday).
