ROBINSON PASSES AWAY; WAS PIONEER SETTLER Death Claims Prominent Resident of Visalia After Long Illness John R. Robinson, one of the earliest pioneers of Tulare county and Visalia, passed away at his home on Northwest First avenue at 1:30 o’clock yesterday afternoon, following an illness of several months’ duration. Death was not unexpected for he had been in failing health for some time, and during the past few days is [it?] was known that he could not recover. J. R. Robinson, better known perhaps as “Tod” Robinson, was born in Richland county, Ohio, August 14, 1835, being 86 years and eight months old at the time of his death. His early life was spent in Iowa, where he obtained his schooling. He started for California by ox-team in 1861, and finally came to Tulare county in 1863. At that time he homesteaded a 160-acre tract of land and engaged in stock raising. For many years he was recognized as the foremost stockman of the S[a]n Joaquin valley. In 1873 he was bereaved of his first wife, who was before her marriage, Elizabeth Denny. He remarried in 1883, taking as his bride at that time, Miss Mathilda Kibbler, who survives him. Besides his widow, he is survived by four daughters. Mrs. B. J. Shippy, of San Jose; Mrs. W. H. Wharton and Katherine Larsen, of Sacramento, and Mrs. George Stonewood [Stoneroad], of Newark; nine grandchildren, William Shippy and Loren C. Harlan of San Francisco; Earl B. Shippy and Charles G. Shippy of San Andrea; Mrs. William Condon of San Jose; Mrs. George White of Madera; Gerald Harlan of Oklahoma; Owen Brabazon of Oakland, and Mrs. Bernice Calder, of Visalia, and seven great-grandchildren. ROBINSON TODAY Last Rites For Pioneer Resident of City and County to be Conducted Funeral services for John R. Robinson, pioneer resident of this city and county, passed away at his home here shortly after noon Monday, will be held this afternoon at 2 o’clock from the Hadley and Locey undertaking parlors, Rev. Douglas T. Reed, pastor of the Methodist church, South, officiating. Music during the services will be furnished by the church choir and pall bearers will be selected from among old friends of the deceased.
