Bruce was an idler around saloons, and bore the general reputation of being a bad man. On the day of the homicide he had threatened to kill Captain Buck and some others, and endeavored to borrow a pistol, but being unable to procure one in camp, went to Saw Mill Flat and returned with one. While entering Bradford's saloon, at Tuttletown, on the evening mentioned, with pistol in hand be was fired at and killed by Captain Buck who was in the saloon. The latter then came to Sonora and submitted himself to the authorities. On Wednesday he underwent an examination before Letford and Galvin, when, it appearing that the homicide was justifiable, he was acquitted. Bruce was engaged in another shooting scrape at Angel's Camp some time since.” END Additional Comments: Sacramento Daily Union, January 18, 1859 (Tuesday), Page 4, Column 1.
