E.W.Allen was born in Kendall County,Illinois,July 24,1842;with his widowed mother and an only brother emigrated to Minnesota in 1856 and settled on a pe- emption claim in Winona County of that state. He enlisted August 16,1862, in Company B,Seventh Mionnesota Infantry, and was honoraby dishcarged August 17,1865, by reason of expiration of term of service. From 1867 to 1883 he was engaged in the sale of agricultural implements in Owatanna,Minn.,Marshall Town,Ia., and in this city. Her served later as superintendant of the Merchants Fair and of the Industrial Exposition of this city, and of several Oregon exhibits in other states. With many others of far greater wealth he suffered reverses in the crash of 1893, from which he could not recover, which led him about three years since to seek a residence in Calfornia where he found remunerative employment to the time of his death. Comrade Allen joined Geo.Wrigth Post of the Gran Army in 1882, serving faithfully in various offices in the order,including one term each as post commander and department commander, and fulfilled his oft repeated promise to die in full membership in Geo.Wright Post. He is kindly remembered by his surviving comrades.
