She was 79. Vi was born Nov. 20, 1930, in Tarnov, NE to Florian and Balbina (Zoucha) Placzek. She grew up speaking Polish and learned English from the Franciscan nuns at St. Michael's Elementary School. The nuns' impact was carried out throughout her life as Vi was a stickler for grammar for herself and her children. She graduated from St. Bonaventure High School, and moved to Omaha where she continued her education in a trade school learning secretarial skills. She mastered her craft in an age when speed and accuracy in typing and shorthand were a necessity. On June 2, 1961, Vi married Ralph Duane Kanitz in Columbus. They raised seven children. Vi's great pleasure was family. She loved get-togethers replete with bustling kitchens, clamorous conversations, and numerous hands of pinochle. She and Ralph built a family centered on faith and hard work. She was a devout Catholic and passed along her deep faith to her husband and children. Vi mastered many skills in creating her home: house remodeling, upholstering, and small business managing. She was an active member in Catholic Daughters of America, St. Vincent de Paul Society, and the Jet Propulsion Lab Motorcycle Club. While she had countless responsibilities, none were more important than that of wife and mother. In this, she was a model to all who witnessed. Vi's personality was a seeming contradiction. Her gentle spirit was complemented by her enjoyment of thrilling movies and scary rides. She gladly accepted double dares when visiting theme parks. Her zest for life was infectious. People, especially small children, gravitated toward her because of her sweet nature. Vi respected each person's uniqueness. She saw the best in others and quietly challenged them to become better versions of themselves. Vi is survived by her husband, Ralph, and her children, Daune Kanitz, Diane Dye, Beverly Owens, Vivian Wood, Alan Kanitz, Gail Atcheson and Mark Kanitz; siblings Minnie White, Ambrose Placzek, Florian Placzek, James Placzek;17 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Florian and Balbina Placzek; siblings, Bernard, Joseph, Leo, Thaddeus, Theresa, Mary Ann, Virginia, and Sally Jane. A vigil and rosary were held on Wednesday, June 16, 2010, and the Mass of the Resurrection was held on Thrusday, June 17, 2010 at St. Malachy Catholic Church. A private committal and itnerment service was held on Friday, June 18, 2010, at Tehachapi Public Cemetery, Westside. Father Joel Davadilla officiated the services. Music as provided by granddaughter, Linnea Wood, and pianist, Lil LaGaly. Wood Family Funeral Service, Inc was entrusted with her care.
