D. CALLIS FOUND DEAD IN HER BED The sudden death of Mrs. Deborah Callis, widow of the late Robert Callis, at her home in this city, yesterday morning, was sad and shocking intelligence to her hosts of friends who had known her to have been in the best of health, apparently, the day previous. As was Mrs. Callis' usual custom she aroused her young grandson, Raymond Dunning, to light the morning fire at 7 o'clock. A half hour later, little Ruth Dunning, sleeping in the same room, looked at her grandmother to see why she did not rise at the accustomed time, and found her lying white and still. The child called in her fright, to her aunt, Mrs. Henry Callis, who was visiting at the home, and the latter made the horrifying discovery that the loved form was cold in death. The end had come quietly, and according to medical opinion was due to pressure of gas upon the heart. A sad coincidence was that a daughter of the deceased, Mrs. Lizzie Dunning, died under similar circumstances several years ago. With her son Edwin, Mrs. Callis contemplated soon going to Imperial Valley to live, the Callis brothers having recently invested in farming property in that section. Mrs. Callis was a pioneer resident of Ventura, living here since early girlhood. Her maiden name was Deborah Smith. She had reached the age of 55 years, and is survived by a family of seven grown children: Edwin, Henry, and Will Callis and Mrs. Clara Ley, Mrs. Marian Rogers, Mrs. Grace Cole and Mrs. Olive Sudtelle. Joyce, Raymond and Ruth Dunning are grand-children of the deceased, whose care she had had since the latter's infancy. The entire community deeply sympathizes with the bereaved family in their hour of sorrow, and the keenest regret is felt in the passing of a good, noble - hearted woman, who enjoyed the highest respect of our citizens, and whose kindness and charitable acts to many throughout the years of a busy and useful life are widely known and admired. The funeral arrangements wil be announced later. Mesdames Ley, Cole and Rogers arrived from Los Angeles yesterday evening in response to the sorrowful tidings of their mother's death, and the youngest daughter, Mrs. Sudtelle, is expected to arrive here from Oregon on Friday.
