She was 25 years old. She was born Aug. 20, 1976, in Nakorn Sri Tamarach Province in Thailand, and was the youngest child of Mrs. Duangjai Issarapaibul and Col. Tawan Ampunsang. She graduated from primary school with the best mannered award at Daruneewattana School. She was also very proud of her accomplishments as the representative of the Nakorn Sri Tamarach province's swimming team. Her family describes her as a pleasant, high-spirited child who was compassionate, generous and brilliant. She and her sister, Orn, left the countryside and moved to Bangkok to live with their Aunt Sompol Na Songkhla and Uncle Amporn Songkhla for six years in hopes of pursuing their dream of attending Pan Smith Secondary School and later graduating from senior high school at Triem Udom Nmkloa. Aun was a beloved student of every teacher who was lucky enough to have her as a pupil, her family says. Upon graduating with honors with her bachelor's degree in biotechnology from Assumption University in Bangkok, Thailand, in 1997, she immediately joined the faculty of the university as a biotechnology lecturer. In 2000 she was offered a full graduate fellowship from The Assumption University to earn her Ph.D. in food chemistry/biochemistry at the department of food science and technology at UC Davis, working under the direction of Professor Gary Smith. She had completed all of her required course work by the end of the winter quarter 2002 and was happily looking forward to beginning her research for the Ph.D. degree. Aun was preceded in death by her brother, Varuud, in 2001. She is survived by her parents; her sister, Meuanphun Ampunsang; her paternal grandmother, Sarai Ampunsang; and her maternal grandmother, Kajit Patcharanond. A celebration of her life will begin at noon Wednesday in the Cruess Hall courtyard at UC Davis. Her friends and colleagues will recount their memories of her. She had many friends in Davis who will miss her. Friends wishing to make a donation in her memory may send their gifts to Wat Sacramento Buddhavanaram, 151 South Ave., Sacramento, CA 95838.
