At age 90, our loving husband and father passed away on Jan. 30, 2006 of complications relating to a fall. He is survived by his loving wife Lena; his sons Michael and his life partner Karen Fleming, of Windsor, and Steven and his wife Leilani, of Valencia. Many cousins, nieces and nephews spread across the western United States and Alaska, will also miss him dearly. Born in Woodland Walter grew up and attended school there, excelling in track and graduating Woodland High in 1934. He served in the Air Force during WWII, piloting gliders over France, Italy and Germany during the Allied advance. He was wounded during his service, but was able to return to Sacramento where he met and married Lena. Happily married for 56 years, they lived and raised their sons in Sacramento, while Walter worked for Golden State Dairy, later Foremost Dairies, as a wholesale route driver. After retiring in 1980, Walter took to two of his favorite passions, working in his garden and baking, and is fondly remembered by many for his pies, cakes, cookies and candies. He was a long-time member of Fremont Presbyterian Church, where he served in various roles and contributed greatly of his time. He was also a devoted neighbor and friend to many in the River Park area. He was a tireless supporter of the Sacramento Blood Bank and a passionate contributor to Loaves and Fishes. All who had the opportunity to know and love him will miss our father. The old home will not be the same without him and his ready offer of a bite of something just out of the oven. At his request, no services will be held. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Loaves and Fishes in Sacramento. Visit the guest book at www.dailydemocrat.com.
