Dr. Brandt was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands on Nov. 14, 1925. He had been a Yolo County resident for 42 years. He began his career in the marine engineering in the only program available in Holland that was not under German control. During World War II, he went into hiding for a couple of years. After immigrating to the U.S. in 1946, he received his M.S. and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from UC Berkeley. He worked for 10 years at the Chevron Research Company, developing oil field equipment and exploration technology. He developed and patented numerous technical advances. In 1964, Dr. Brandt became a professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering at UC Davis. He was a professor emeritus at UCD and chairman of the department from 1969 to 1974 and in 1985 to 1991. After retiring from UCD with nearly 40 years of service, he guided and mentored students at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore. He was also chairman of the board at Clean Energy Systems Inc. from 1997 to 2005. He was a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, American Welding Society, Sigma Xi and Tau Beta Pi; chairman of the El Macero Service Advisory Committee, a volunteer at the visitors center at the SNRA near Sun Valley, Idaho. Survivors include Dr. Brandt's wife of 53 years, Muriel Brandt; his daughters, Joyce Copelan and her husband Craig of Winters and Marilyn Brandt of Stewartsville, N.J.; and his son, Robert Brandt of Santa Clara. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henk and Henny Korte. The family requests memorials in Mr. Brandt's name be directed to The American Cancer Society, 1765 Challenge Way, Suite 115, Sacramento, 95815; University Covenant Church, 315 Mace Blvd., Davis; Davis Community Church, 412 C St., Davis, 95616; or Yolo Hospice, P.O. Box 1017, Davis, 95617. Services: A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 3 at the Davis Community Church, 412 C St., Davis with a reception immediately following the service. Reverends Donna Waterman and Jamie Crook will officiate. A private scattering of ashes will be held at a later time. The Nautilus Society is assisting the family with arrangements.
