Mace Herbert Bruce Mace died Oct. 6, 2002, in Rancho Mirage, following complications from Alzheimer's disease. He was 92. Born April 22, 1910, in Lovelock, Nev., to Charles Bruce Mace and Florence Mack Mace, he grew up in Dixon. On Sept. 29, 1941, he married June Kegley. Shortly after they married, he joined the Army and spent the years of World War II as an Army flight instructor stationed in Calareo. Following the war, he and June moved to Dillon, Mont. For the next six years, he, with his father and late brother, Freland Mace, managed a large ranching operation in that area. After the sale of the Montana ranch, he returned to California and the Davis area to manage a diversified farming operation. Mace Ranch was at one time the largest grower of tomatoes in California. In 1961, together with his father and brother, he co-founded El Macero Country Club. The Mace family was the original owner of property that is now the Mace Ranch subdivision and El Macero in Davis. Flying was his lifelong avocation. When he felt that he should no longer fly, Mace turned his love of piloting airplanes into a passion for piloting boats and deep-sea fishing. He kept his membership in the Shriners in Butte, Mont., and the Masonic Lodge in Dillon, Mont., for 50 years. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, June Mace; sister, Lois Mace Chappell of Davis; nephews, Bruce Mace of Sacramento and Grant Chappell of New York; and nieces, Janice Mace Remely of Dillon and LeeAnne Chappell Vaughan of Corte Madera. Inurnment will be graveside at the Dixon Cemetery on Tuesday at 11 a.m. The family suggests that memorials be made to the Eisenhower Five Star Club for Alzheimer's disease in Rancho Mirage.
