'Red' Moldenhauer Leonard Alex "Red" Moldenhauer died on Sept. 25, 2002, at Kaiser Hospital in South Sacramento due to complications with diabetes. A 38-year resident of Davis, he was 72 years old. He was born in Norfolk, Neb., on March 19, 1930, to Alex E. and Elise (Villnow) Moldenhauer; both were descendants of Norfolk pioneer families. He attended District 21 School in Stanton County, Neb., St. Paul's Lutheran School, Norfolk High School and Norfolk Junior College. While enrolled at the University of Minnesota, he played football when Bernie Bierman still coached. During the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Army. In 1956, he moved to California and began working for the State Water Resources Board. He subsequently worked for the State Reclamation Board and than as a basin planner for the Central Valley Regional Quality Control Board. Following his retirement from 18 years of state employment, he established Moldenhauer and Bennett Engineering Co., which later became Moldenhauer Engineering Co. He loved his church and took leadership roles in congregations wherever he lived. In 1961, he organized a Sacramento area Lutheran singles group and there met Joanne Gatz, a teacher at Davis High School. They married in 1962. He particularly enjoyed many activities of the Lutheran Layman's League. He served as president of the Davis group, as membership chairman and as president of the California-Nevada District, and as representative for Region 14 on the Board of Governors of the International Lutheran Layman's League. Concern and empathy for young people characterized him. He and Joanne were youth counselors at Davis Lutheran Church. With his own hands, he built much of Tahoe-Tallac Lutheran Camp. He was instrumental in focusing the attention of the International Lutheran Layman's League on involving more young participants. Many of his employees were students or recent graduates. His affability and his sense of humor drew people to him, especially his nieces, nephews and children of friends and neighbors. They often described him as a big teaser. In addition to his wife, Joanne, his survivors include his sister, Ardith Wacker of Norfolk, Neb.; his brother-in-law, Edwin Gatz of Pasadena; his sister-in-law, Carole Gatz of Portland, Ore.; four nieces, two nephews and their families. Friends are invited to a graveside service at the Davis Cemetery at 3 p.m. Friday. A memorial service will take place at Davis Lutheran Church, Eighth and B streets, on Saturday, Oct. 5, at 2 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Lutheran Hour Ministries of the International Lutheran Laymen's League, 660 Mason Ridge Center Drive, St. Louis, MO 63141-8557.
