Lantz Fayne Harrison Lantz died suddenly at Sutter Memorial Hospital on Sept. 22, 2002. He was born to John Charles Lantz and Glora Mae Cochran Lantz on Nov. 6, 1919, in Cochranton, Pa. He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II decommissioning Navy vessels near San Diego. After his honorable discharge from the service, he attended UCLA where he met actor Kirk Douglas, who was starring in the movie, "Young Man with a Horn." He came to UC Davis as a student in 1950 and received B.S. and M.S. degrees there. He was an influential member of the avian science department at UCD, contributing to nutritional and medical research, including that for muscular dystrophy, until his retirement in 1985. He was involved in many community services. He was a deacon and an elder as well as the treasurer at Davis Community Church for 20 years. He held several positions in the American Association of Retired Persons at the Davis Senior Center. He supported numerous wildlife and conservation causes and was a member of the Audubon Society. He enjoyed fishing, traveling, bird watching and especially camping in Yosemite Park with his wife and children. He and his wife, Lillian, enjoyed square dancing from 1953 until his hip surgery precluded the activity in 1989. He was preceded in death by his youngest daughter, Barbara Lantz, in December of 2000 and a newborn sister in 1921. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Lillian A. Lantz of Davis; two daughters, Marilyn Maple of Pink Mountain, British Columbia, and Marjorie Vendrasco and her husband Michael of Bakersfield; a son, Keith Lantz of Texarkana, Ark.; three granddaughters, Kathleen Salustro and her husband Silvio of Pink Mountain, British Columbia, Laura Richter and her husband Jim of Ft. Nelson, British Columbia, and Melanie Guttner and her husband Andreas of Pink Mountain, British Columbia; and a grandson, Dr. Michael J. Vendrasco of Los Angeles. He also has six great-grandchildren: Rachael and Gabriela Salustro, Brandon and Skyla Richter and Sonja and Christopher Guttner. He is further survived by two brothers, Rex Lantz and his wife Shirley and Doyle Lantz and his wife Inez, all of Meadville, Pa.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He truly blessed every life he touched with his selfless, loving and compassionate heart. His focus in life was always on others. He is a gentle soul who will be missed. A memorial service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Davis Community Church, 412 C St. Remembrances may be sent to the Davis Community Church or to the Davis Senior Center at 646 A St., Davis, CA 95616.
