Perazzo pbperazzo@comcast.net August 6, 2004, 7:57 pm "The Davis Enterprise," Thursday, September 19, 2002 Stephen M. Tauzer Stephen M. Tauzer, 57, died unexpectedly Sept. 13, 2002, at his home in Bakersfield, where he was the assistant district attorney of Kern County. He was born in Woodland, where he graduated from Woodland High School before attending the University of San Francisco and the UC Davis School of Law. After working for a time in the public defender's office, he joined the district attorney, where he was promoted to chief deputy district attorney in February 1986. He later became assistant district attorney in October 1988, serving as District Attorney Ed Jagels' second-in-command. He was also in charge of the district attorney's Child Support Division until it was spun off into a separate county department last year. He was a member of the California District Attorneys Association's legislative committee. Tauzer grew up on a farm in Woodland, the oldest of 14 children. In high school he loved journalism, writing and languages. He was editor of The Orange Peal and also wrote for the Woodland Daily Democrat. He also won several academic awards as well as a drama scholarship to USF. In 1998, Tauzer suffered two massive heart attacks and was given a 1 percent chance of living. Friends and family were amazed that he not only survived but also returned to the office four months later. Outside the office, Tauzer liked to ski, sail, play racquetball and spend time with his family. In the past 15 years, he arranged and enjoyed family trips to Indonesia and Ireland among other places. Just recently, he returned from a trip to Alaska with his mother. Like his father, Ed Tauzer, who died in 1989, Steve will be remembered by all who knew him for his strong sense of ethics and his commitment to the causes in which he believed. He was generous with both his time and resources, would help anyone in need and constantly worked to better his community. In May, he received the local Bar Association's prestigious Bench and Bar Award, which honors outstanding law-related community contributions. Award-givers said they also were highlighting Tauzer's "ability to maintain standards of civility, integrity and a sense of fair play." He is survived by his mother, Mary Tauzer of Korbel, as well as six sisters, seven brothers and numerous nieces and nephews. His sisters include Joan Tauzer, Patricia Tauzer Pavao and her husband Tom, and Trina Koushmaro and her husband Doron, all of Woodland; Terry Tauzer and her husband Rich Lewis of Bayside; Lisa Geer and her husband Tony of Mendocino; and Margaret Tauzer of Korbel. His brothers include Rick Tauzer and his wife Yolanda, and Mark Tauzer and his wife Diane, of Woodland; Dave Tauzer and his wife Kathy Tomczuk of Arcata and British Columbia; Tom Tauzer and his wife Barbara of Gladstone, Mich.; Chris Tauzer and his wife Susan of Portland, Ore.; Paul Tauzer and his wife Leslie of Petoskey, Mich.; and James Tauzer and his wife Diane of Korbel. A funeral will be held Saturday in Bakersfield. Doughty, Calhoun and O'Meara are handling the arrangements. A private memorial service will be held for the family in Korbel at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in Tauzer's honor be made to the American Heart Association or other charity of the donor's choice.
