Perazzo pbperazzo@comcast.net August 6, 2004, 7:59 pm "The Davis Enterprise," Wednesday, September 18, 2002 Gordon L. Huntington A third-generation Californian born in Oakland on Dec. 18, 1919, Gordon Leland Huntington died peacefully in his Davis home on Sept. 14, 2002, surrounded by immediate family. He is survived by Bridget Murray (Taylor), his wife of 53 years; his son, Charles of Canby, Ore.; his daughter, Margaret (Peggy) Popp, her husband Bill, and grandchildren William, Ryan and Bridgette Popp, of Diamondville, Wyo.; his brother, Donald Merrill and his wife Lela, of El Toro; his brother-in-law, Father Charles Taylor of Buffalo, Wyo.; and a multitude of other relatives and friends. He loved life and contributed tirelessly to favorite projects for St. James Catholic Church in Davis, the Knights of Columbus, and professional soil science organizations. He will be remembered for his kind spirit and missed by those who knew him. He had a long association with the University of California as a student, soil scientist, specialist, instructor/lecturer and ultimately in an emeritus position within the land, air and water resources department at UC Davis. Huntington's association with the university began in 1938, lasted more than 60 years, and was interrupted only during a brief stint as a rancher and by his service as an ensign-lieutenant (F.G.) in the U.S. Navy during World War II. His knowledge of California's diverse soils was valued by fellow scientists and was an inspiration to his students. A touring summer field course that he taught for many years was a high point in the academic experience of many soils science students who attended UC Davis during his tenure. Following retirement, he continued to work with graduate students at UCD and played an important role in getting the San Joaquin soil series designated as California's state soil. A rosary service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Davis Funeral Chapel, 116 D St., and a funeral mass at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. James Catholic Church, 200 W. 14th St. Interment, following the mass, will be at the Davis Cemetery, 820 Pole Line Road. Friends are also invited to a gathering at 1 p.m. Thursday at the International House, Davis, 10 College Park. Remembrances may be made to the St. James Building Fund, the Jim Thayer Soil Science Endowment (through the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences at UC Davis), or a charity of choice.
