Born on May 12, 1921, in Springfield, Ill., he was 81 years old. After a phone call from his mother, Catherine, telling him the phone company was hiring, he came to Santa Rosa and began a career with Pacific Telephone and Telegraph that lasted almost 42 years. This was interrupted by his service in the Army Signal Corps during World War II. He return to Santa Rosa afterward and resumed his career. He retired in 1983. He loved to keep busy on projects for family and friends. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, a philanthropic organization of telephone employees and families who perform volunteer work in the community. With this group he built handicapped access at state parks and dressed as Santa Claus. They visited orphanages and hospitals in Europe and Asia, dispensing gifts donated by local merchants at home. He was a member of SIRS, and was a lifetime member of Theodore Roosevelt Post 21 of the American Legion. He and his wife Olly volunteered at the Luther Burbank Center and at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. After moving to Davis in 2000 they were auxiliary volunteers at Sutter Davis Hospital and at the Davis Senior Center. He was the beloved husband of Olly Small and the loving father of John Small of Sacramento, and James Small and his wife Susan of Sebastapol. He was the adored grandfather of Kathryn Small. He was preceded in death by his brother, George Small, and sisters, Ruth Ross and Betty MacCallum. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Saint Phillips Church in Occidental.
