Henry Y. Yamada

After a stubborn fight against lung cancer, retired Davis farmer Henry Y. Yamada
died on Aug. 23, 2002. He was 68 years old.

Born Jan. 24, 1934, in Sacramento to Joe and Haru Yamada, he grew up at his
father's bait shop until World War II when he and his family were forced to
relocate to the Tule Lake Internment Camp. When the war ended, they returned to
Sacramento to start over.

After graduating from McClatchy High School in 1952, Yamada went to UC Davis to
study agriculture. He was then drafted into the U.S. Army and spent two years
overseas in Korea. After returning to the United States, Henry went into farming
with his father and brother. They had many prosperous years farming corn and
tomatoes in Davis.

Yamada loved life. He enjoyed the great outdoors. After retiring from farming in
1989, he spent time each year salmon fishing in Alaska, traveling to Europe and
driving his trademark Ford Bronco to San Jose to visit his three grandchildren.

He enjoyed eating at Cindy's Restaurant with his breakfast club, something he
had been doing for the past 30 years.

He loved his family -- his wife of 39 years, Kumiko; his children, Phyllis (and
John) Louie of San Francisco, Joyce (and Emmanuel) Gjee of San Jose and his son
Dean Yamada of Los Angeles; and his three grandchildren, Elisabeth, Annalicia
and Stephen Gjee.
 
A celebration of his life will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Davis Community
Church, 412 C St. in Davis.
