Perazzo pbperazzo@comcast.net August 7, 2004, 10:15 pm "The Davis Enterprise," Thursday, August 15, 2002 Beecher Crampton Beecher Crampton died Aug. 10, 2002, at his home in Davis. He was 84 years old. He was born in Kankakee, Ill., on July 15, 1918, to the late Charles and Carrie Crampton. He moved to California in 1922 and received his associate of arts degree at Modesto Junior College in 1938. While attending the University of California at Berkeley, he earned his bachelor's degree in 1941 and his master's degree in 1951. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army. From 1945 to 1949, he was in the nursery and gift store business. In 1951, he began his long career in education at Reedley College. He then taught at the UC Davis from 1952 to 1984. During his tenure at UC Davis, he served as curator of the Herbarium, and taught agronomy and range science. He was also a herbarium botanist and lecturer. He received numerous awards during his career. In 1979, he was named the Distinguished Academic Lecturer. In 1987, the University of California Board of Regents designated the Beecher Crampton Herbarium. He was a member of Sigma Xi, the California Botanical Society and the American Society of Range Management, and was a long-standing member of many committees associated with his work. He is survived by his wife, Veronica Crampton of Davis; daughters, Vivien Joan Crampton of Newcastle, Barbara Ann Thomen of Boulder Creek and Rita Catherine Mary Crampton of Elk Grove; sons, Paul Beecher Crampton of Tracy, Gregory Stuart Crampton and Mark Anthony Crampton, both of Eugene, Ore. Also surviving him are 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. A memorial mass is scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday at St. James Catholic Church in Davis.
