When he moved to Davis to teach sixth grade in 1951, he thought he would only be in Davis for a couple of years. He arrived having just graduated from San Jose State College where, with the assistance of the GI Bill, he studied history. He had hoped to gain a few years of teaching experience before moving on. Instead, he made Davis his home for more than 50 years. Born Sept. 17, 1923, he was the youngest of three children, all sons, born to Margaret Garcia Mansfield and Walter Plaskett Mansfield. He spent his childhood living in King City, leaving at age 17 to enlist in the U.S. Navy to assist in the war effort. For more than 35 years, he worked in the Davis Joint Unified School District. During his tenure he served as a teacher, coach and principal. He also ran an adult education program. From 1967 to 1979, he was principal of Davis Senior High School. His love of his adopted hometown was evidenced by his civic involvement. As the community grew, he participated in developing many of the features associated with Davis today. He was an active member of the Davis Rotary Club and served on a variety of city boards such as the Davis Planning Commission. During his involvement with the commission, he advocated for the development of a neighborhood park plan. He liked good food, good wine and good friends. He played poker and golf with a tight-knit group of friends for more than 35 years. He was an avid supporter and fan of high school and UC Davis sports. He enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren participate in sporting events. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; son, Richard and his wife Gail; and daughter, Marianne Mansfield Putnam and her husband Neil. His is further survived by his grandchildren, Margot and Richard Mansfield of Davis and Mollie of Louisville, Colo. Friends are invited to attend a memorial service at St. Martin's Episcopal Church on Wednesday at 2 p.m. A reception at Stonegate Country Club will immediately follow the service. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to the Rotary Youth Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 185, Davis, CA 95616.
