Barnett Merry Roselle Barnett, better known as Merry Grandma, died June 25, 2002, at Sierra Health Care with her family by her side. She was 93 years old. She was born on Nov. 21, 1908, in Fresno. In 1978, she decided to move to Davis to take care of her first grandchild. In April, she was diagnosed with Bile Duct Cancer. Until May 27, 2002, she remained living independently at her apartment. Thanks to Yolo Hospice and Sierra Health Care, she was able to remain comfortable throughout her last days. She was a healthy, energetic and friendly woman who enjoyed walking every day and talking to all who lived in the community. She absolutely loved to bake. There was never a day that she was not offering someone a fresh-baked cookie, a slice of her famous pumpkin pie or a loaf of her banana nut bread. Her baking was always from scratch and her special ingredient was her desire to make someone happy. She also enjoyed indoor plants, her favorite being the African violet. She was a member of the Violet Club of Davis and Woodland and won several awards for the violets she grew. When she wasn't working on plants, she could be found taking care of her grandchildren. She was extremely involved in their lives. She was a member of the Davis Rebecca's Lodge Saratoga Senior Center. Attending or watching church services was also a favorite weekly activity. She is survived by her daughter, Marcia Corrigan and her husband Dan of Davis; her granddaughter, Angela Stevenson and her husband James of Davis; her grandson, D.J. Corrigan of Davis; her great-granddaughter, Alexis Stevenson of Davis and, of course, "Kitty," her best friend the black cat. The family invites anyone who would like to participate in the celebration of her life. The service will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at 1850 Hanover Drive, in the recreation room. A private service will be July 27 at Saint Andrews Memorial Garden in Saratoga, where she will be laid to rest. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Yolo County Hospice.
