Derrel S. Dowdle

Longtime Davis resident Derrel S. Dowdle died on June 24, 2002, with his family
by his side. He was 78.

He was born in Ballinger, Texas, on Aug. 27, 1923. A veteran of World War II, he
fought in the Battle of the Bulge.

He also served in the Korean Conflict. He retired from the U.S. Army and the
Civil Service after 20 years of service in each. He then ran his own lawn care
business, Acme Lawn Maintenance, up until two years ago, when declining health
forced his final retirement.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mutsuko (Sue) Dowdle; two daughters,
Barbara Dowdle-Rizzo and her husband Philip Rizzo of Richmond and Linda Walter
of Carmichael; a grandson, Graham Dowdle Walter of Carmichael; and a brother,
Lynn Dowdle of San Antonio.

The family would like to thank the staff of Woodland Memorial Hospital for their
compassionate care through his many hospitalizations.

The family would also like to thank Yolo Hospice staff members for their care
during his final days at home.

A memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul's Episcopal
Church, 15th and J streets in Sacramento. A reception will follow in the parish
hall.

The family requests that any remembrances be directed to Yolo Hospice, P.O. Box
1014, Davis, CA 95617, or to the American Lung Association.
