Maclean died suddenly while baking bread, one of his favorite activities, on June 18, 2002. He was 81. He was born on Feb. 21, 1921, in Oakland and was raised in the Livermore area. In 1947, he graduated from UC Berkeley with a bachelor of science degree in forestry. He married Jeanne Fayette on Aug. 31, 1946, in Stockton. He worked from 1947 until 1984 with the state Department of Forestry, where he was a staff member for forest management. He also served as a school board member from 1961 to 1966 in the Rincon Valley Union School District in Santa Rosa. He was a devoted and avid outdoorsman, enjoying backpacking, hiking and fishing. He was an Eagle Scout and later served as a leader in the Boy Scouts, in which he received several leadership awards, including the Silver Bear and the Silver Beaver, and training under the Wood Badge program. He was active in the AFS exchange program and he and his wife, Jeanne, served as area representatives, hosting several students in their home and developing an extended family throughout the country and world. He had an insatiable appetite for knowledge and was an avid reader. He and Jeanne traveled extensively through Europe and North and South America, and especially enjoyed their educational trips to the Amazon and Galapagos Islands. He continued to attend university extension classes, where he studied computers and German. He was preceded in death by his son, Bruce, in 1975. He is survived by son Glenn of Sacramento and grandchildren Conor, Rowan and Mairead; son Brian of Pinedale, Wyo., and grandchildren Sarah, Forrest and Logan; and daughter Beryl Beckwith of Alameda and granddaughter Robyn. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers or donations, the family requests that those wishing to remember him plant a tree, encourage growth in a garden or young person, hike a forest trail, climb a mountain or just give someone a happy smile.
