"Sam" Ordonez Sr. died peacefully at his home on June 14, 2002, with his children and grandchildren at his side. Born in the Philippines on July 24, 1909, to Olympia and Ben Ordonez, he was 93. Ordonez immigrated to the U.S. at the age of 16, after the death of his parents. Knowing only his native tongue, he learned to speak English and Spanish. He farmed Yolo and Solano counties for more than 60 years and became well known for his tomato and sugar beet crops, family members said. He married his wife, Philis in 1946 and moved to Davis from Sacramento, raising seven children. They were married for 56 years. Family members described Ordonez as "a man of small stature but a giant to all of us." They will remember him a man whose true loves in life were his wife, his children and grandchildren, and farming. Ordonez was considered to be a man of many talents and a great teacher of the meaning of family. In the eyes of his children and grandchildren, there was not a more gentle, intelligent or giving person. He is proceeded in death by his wife of 56 years, Philis; daughter Olympia and brothers and sisters. He is survived by four daughters: Nancy Weaver of Davis; Helen Clayton and her husband, Richard, of Sacramento; Toni Cooper and her husband, Craig, of Davis; and Melody Breault and her husband, Butch, of Dixon. He is also survived by sons Martin Framilla Jr. and his wife, Robin, of North Carolina; Sam Ordonez Jr. of Woodland; and Marty Ordonez of Davis. He also had 18 grandchildren: Debra, Teresa, Wendy Elena, Robert, Sam, Lisa, Richard, Tristan, Channon, Amber, Joshua, Samuel, Justin, Michelle, Brent, Brian and Brandon; 17 great-grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren. Loving lifelong friends are Judi White, and Harry and Carlos Garasi. There will be a viewing from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the Davis Funeral Home. A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Tuesday at St. James Catholic Church, with a private burial at the Davis Cemetery.
