Ogasawara, UC Davis professor emeritus of avian and animal sciences, died on June 8, 2002, in Davis. He was 88. He was born in San Diego on Nov. 10, 1913, and his secondary schooling was in Battle Mountain, Nev. He graduated from Lander County High School in June 1939. He received a bachelor of science degree in 1949 and his doctor of philosophy in 1957 at UC Davis. He was appointed assistant professor at UC Davis in 1957 and subsequently advanced to associate and then to full professor. He was senior author or co-author of 83 publications, served as major professor for four Ph.D. recipients and nine master's of science recipients, sponsored many F.A.O. fellows, and was an outstanding undergraduate adviser for more than 500 students. He shared his expertise with counterparts in foreign nations through various overseas assignments: Nagoya University, Japan (1966, 1967, 1970); Edinburgh University, Scotland (1970, 1971, 1977); southern Brazil (1980); and Guangzho, China (1988). He served as chairman of a U.S. Department of Agriculture-sponsored national turkey research study committee (1978, 1979) and as general chairman of the 71st Poultry Science Association's annual meeting, which took place in Davis in 1982. He was awarded the National Turkey Federation's Outstanding Research Award in 1966 for pioneering studies in avian artificial insemination and the Poultry Science Association's Ralston Purina Outstanding Teacher Award in 1976. In 1982, he was one of five distinguished North American poultry scientists who were granted the highest honor of Fellow of the Poultry Science Association for his outstanding research and teaching contributions for the previous 25 years to the American and international poultry industries. He was made an honorary member of the Japan Zootechnical Society in 1991. He was a selfless volunteer in both his professional and personal life. Many campus and community organizations owe their current vigor to his efforts. These groups include, but are not limited to, the honor society of Phi Kappa Phi, the Davis chapter of AARP and the Catholic Community at the Davis Newman Center. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Kay Ogasawara; two daughters, Pam Ogasawara and her husband Mike Corson of Urbana, Md., and Patty Sunui; son, Paul Ogasawara and his wife Christie Guth of Sebastopol; and five grandchildren, Mark and Katie Sunui and Greg, Tommy and Hannah Ogasawara. Recitation of the Rosary and visitation will begin at 7:15 p.m. Friday at McNary's Chapel, 458 College St., Woodland. A funeral mass will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at St. James Catholic Church, 200 W. 14th St., Davis. A potluck reception will follow, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Davis Senior Center, 646 A St. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Kratzer, Ogasawara, Vohra Scholarship Fund.
