Gibbs Mary Ring Gibbs, a 32-year Davis resident, died after a brief illness with hepatitis on May 31, 2002, at her home in Davis. She was 82. She was born on Nov. 25, 1919. She married Charles Gibbs in 1948 when both were living in Ann Arbor, Mich. In 1949, the couple moved to Placerville, where Charlie took a job with Bank of America. During World War II, she worked as an air traffic controller and served in the Red Cross. In addition, she was a graduate of the University of Minnesota with a bachelor's degree in food science. The couple moved to Davis in 1970. In the early 1970s, she was very active in the Davis Branch of the League of Women Voters. She worked for many years as an admissions officer at UC Davis. After her retirement in 1990, she taught English as a second language to UC Davis foreign students. She also enjoyed volunteering her time with her many friends at the Sutter Davis Hospital Auxiliary and Yolo County Library Book Menders. She loved to travel and was especially interested in China. She was among the first group of American tourists to visit China after it ended its long isolation in the 1970s. She was also known for her sense of humor and kindness. She is greatly missed by her daughters, Sally Gibbs of Davis and Nancy Gibbs of Novato, as well as her son-in-law and two grandsons, all of Novato. Friends are invited to a memorial service that will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 22, at the Unitarian Church of Davis, 27074 Patwin Road, Davis. Interment will be in Minnesota. Donations in her memory can be made to Yolo Hospice, P.O. Box 1014, Davis, CA 95614, or to the ASPCA, 424 E. 92nd St., New York, NY 10128. The Nightingale-Gilmore Funeral Chapel of Sacramento is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
