She was 49. She was born on June 8, 1952, in Elmhurst, Ill., and later lived in Davis for more than 20 years. She was a graduate of Carthage College of Kenosha, Wis., where she was elected the first female student body president in the school's history. She also attended Northwestern Law School in Chicago. Before illness disabled her, she worked as a journalist for the Chicago Sun-Times and Daily News and The Chicago Reader newspapers. She was best known for her revealing interviews of famous and not-so-famous Chicagoans. She later worked as a legal secretary at the Chicago offices of Baker & McKenzie, the world's largest law firm, and at law firms in San Francisco and Sacramento. According to her family, in later years she continued to exhibit the lively intelligence, creativity and humor that were her hallmarks since childhood. She continued to write, and composed poetry and a novella based on her teen-age years. She believed her greatest achievement in life to be her beloved daughter, Katie Ann McEachern, who lives in Tulare. She was preceded in death by her parents, Doris and Martin Heckmann, and by her brother, Donald Ganoung. She is survived by her daughter; former husband Bruce McEachern of Davis; her sisters and brothers-in-law, Marci and Al Coglianese of Rio Vista and Ellen and Walter Gorelick of Tulare; and her nieces and nephews, Peter Coglianese of Cupertino, Laura Coglianese of Rio Vista, Greg Coglianese of Tracy, Richard Ganoung of Madison, Wis., Wendy Piraro of Elmhurst, Mark Ganoung of Wheeling, Ill., and Dori Donovan of Sarasota, Fla.
