She passed away at home on Feb. 20, 2002. She was 87. She was born in Chico and lived most of her life in Coachella Valley. In the 1940s she married Howard Chadwick, and they raised their family in Thermal. Bette was a teacher and later became a reading specialist in the Thermal elementary schools until her retirement. She remained active in a variety of community service organizations, traveled the world with her grand sense of adventure, and pursued her love of painting, golf and the outdoors. She was an enthusiastic member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Indio, and shared her love of Christ. She was a constant source of spiritual inspiration to her family. Her most cherished role in life was as wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She will be dearly missed by her family: her sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Al Arens of Santa Ana; her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Todd Hammond of Davis; her son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Jan Chadwick of Rancho Bernardo; her son and daughter-in-law, Art and Joy Chadwick of Keene, Texas; her grandchildren, Dan Chadwick and his wife Shirleane, Barbara Chadwick, Michael and David Cheney, and Amy, Wendy and Kim Chadwick; and great-granddaughter Sierra Chadwick. "We will continue to feel her love within us until the day we are reunited," her family says. A celebration of her life, followed by an ice cream social, will be held at Pole Line Road Baptist Church, 770 Pole Line Road, in Davis on Friday at 5 p.m. Donations in her memory may be made to RRR Adult Day Program, 915 27th St., Sacramento, CA 95816 and Citizens Who Care, 416 F St., Davis, CA 95616, all for Alzheimer's support.
