John was born in Berkeley on October 8, 1957. John grew up in northern California on a ranch west of Winters and on a ranch along the Mattole River at Honeydew, Humboldt County owned by his grandparents, Ben and Eva Etter. When John was 15 he routinely drove a supply vehicle alone across the Namib Desert to resupply a remote research camp where is (sic) parents and several graduate students were conducting research on wildlife. He discovered a long over-looked beetle species named cardiosis hamiltonulus, a species that proved to be the key to unraveling the meaning of the extraordinary species diversity of other Namid Desert species. His find was so spectacularly different from all other known forms that it was named after him the day he discovered it in 1967 by the famed Austrian entomologist, Charles Koch. In recent years he was a successful businessman in the Phoenix area, owning several small businesses involving mobile mechanic auto repair, light construction and self-help construction. In the Davis, area he once owned and operated a spiritual healing center. He maintained a long-term interest in helping the less fortunate to improve themselves and had what he felt was a revolutionary reading course under development. His parents, Bill and Marion Hamilton of Winters, his sister Susan Hamilton, also of Winters, nieces Lily Starling of Olympia, Washington, Emma Pfanner of Winters and nephew William Pfanner, also of Winters, survive John.
