Smith William "Bill" Bernard Smith, a longtime resident of Davis, died May 8, 2004, at Courtyard Health Care in Davis from natural causes. He was 78 years old. Born on July 5, 1925, in Hartford, Conn., to Thomas and Helen Smith, he was one of seven children. After graduating from high school, he proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Rhineland Campaign and Central Europe Campaign. During his service, he received numerous medals and commendations, including a Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster. He worked in the automotive repair industry for more than 35 years. He was described by his family as a simple, hard-working man who enjoyed his family. He was well respected in the community of Davis and will be missed by all who knew him, his family says. He was preceded in death by his two brothers. He is survived by his former wife and best friend, Helen Smith of Davis; his second wife, Ann Smith of Davis; his children, Kim Hills and her husband Jeff of Vacaville, Tina Smith of Davis, and Bill Smith and his wife Kari of Fernley, Nev. He is also survived by his grandson, Jeffrey Smith of Fernley, Nev.; his two sisters, Carol and Lorraine; and his two brothers, Jimmy and Dutch. Friends are invited to attend a graveside funeral at 11 a.m. Friday at the Davis Cemetery, 820 Pole Line Road. Arrangements are under the direction of the Davis Funeral Chapel.
