Perazzo pbperazzo@comcast.net and Judith Hinton October 20, 2004, 11:44 pm “The Daily Democrat,” Thursday, January 17, 2002 Carmen (Martin) Martinez Rojo Carmen (Martin) Martinez Rojo died in her daughter's home in Sacramento Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, at age 86. Born Sept. 12, 1915, near Putah Creek about five miles east of the City of Winters, Mrs. Rojo was the daughter of the late Antonio Melendez Martin and Maria (Gomez) Martin. She grew up on the family farm which was in the Olive District southwest of Winters in Solano County. She attended Olive Elementary School and a 1934 Winters High School graduate. After high school, the then Miss Martin, became the bookkeeper for and then assisted in operations of the Garcia and Company grocery store in Main Street in Winters. In 1942, she married Manual Martinez and together they operated an almond ranch south west of Arbuckle. Upon Mr. Martinez's death in 1944 she continued to operate the almond ranch until 1949 at which time she moved back to Winters and worked at Riley's Variety Store. In 1954, she married Chris Rojo of Winters, and continued raising her daughter as well as three stepdaughters and one stepson. She worked along side her husband at their grocery store, The Winters Food Center from 1954 until it was sold in 1972. Later she worked for the Morgans in town at their candy factory and then at the Morgan ranch which was located where her parent's farm had been. According to her family members, “she traveled with her husband throughout California and much of the United States. They also traveled to parts of Europe including her heritage country, Spain. In Spain she met many of her relatives and continued to correspond with them. She participate in the family gatherings and functions. She was an avid gardener setting the front yard ablaze in color during the spring, summer and fall, and as a nature lover could not be kept from the garden even during the winter. She was a playful with a great sense of humor. She was quiet, wise and dignified, and was known for her loving and caring of others. She always had a kind word and continuously observed and practiced the positives in life.” Mrs. Rojo is survived by her husband, Chris Rojo of Winters; daughter, Carmen Parker and husband Dale of Sacramento; stepdaughters, Ann Fischer and husband Roger of Phoenix, Ariz., Isabel Leduc of Southbridge, Mass., and Mary Coleman and husband Ray of Sacramento; stepsons, Manual Martinez and wife Aileen of Sacramento, and Fred Rojo of Woodland; and numerous stepgranchildren; stepgreat-greandchildren; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister, Mary M. Garcia; and brothers, Antonio G., Frank G., John G., Joe G., Emilio G. and Miguel G. Martin. A funeral service is scheduled at 11 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 17, at The Winters Pioneer Presbyterian Church. Interment will be at the Winters Cemetery immediately following the ceremony.
