Deupree of Davis died in his sleep on April 16, 2004, due to complications from a stroke he suffered in 2001. He was 89 years old. He graduated from Indianapolis' Shortridge High School in 1934 and soon after left for whatever adventures he might find in New York City. One job of interest was with a coffee company as an apprentice coffee taster, where he developed a lingering taste for coffee. He was in New York for another year before he left for Chicago to be of help to his mother. When World War II began, he got a job with a divisions of American Airlines transporting war materiel to Europe. This job led to his joining the Air Force in 1942 as a first lieutenant navigator in B-24s. He served in the South Pacific theater until 1944, when he was injured and sent back to the States to recover. He was honorably discharged from the service with a Purple Heart on his release from the hospital. He enrolled in Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, and graduated with a bachelor of science degree in 1949. He continued his education at the University of Southern California, where he earned a master's degree in social work. This led him to a job with the California State Division of Adult Parole in 1954. In 1960, he married Froydis and in 1961 his daughter, Joan, was born. He took a promotion within the Parole Department that required a move to Sacramento. In 1963 the family moved to their current residence of Davis. In 1964, Deupree decided he had to become more active physically and began an exercise program by giving up elevators and climbing up and down nine flights of stairs in his office building morning and night. A number of his colleagues followed suit. He loved tennis (he had a devastating first serve), hiking, biking and snowshoeing. He ran the Bay to Breakers race in San Francisco four years in a row while in his 60s. In 1974, he retired from the Department of Corrections and enrolled in the UC Davis teaching credential program. During his student teaching experience, he decided not to pursue a teaching position of his own. Instead, he worked with his wife in her classroom for the next 11 years at Whitehead Elementary School in Woodland. Much of his bike exercise was gained by driving to Woodland with his wife each morning and biking 12 miles back to Davis at noon. It was on one of these fateful days when he wasn't wearing a helmet that he had an accident on his bike, which changed his life forever and eventually led to his stroke. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, brother-in-law and friend, his family said. He is survived by his wife, Froydis of Davis; daughters, Joan Smith of Sacramento, and Laurie Gunning of Palatine, Ill.; granddaughter, Nicole Smith of Sacramento; stepgrandson, Zack Hammond of Sacramento; sister, Betty Jean Huey of Bath, N.C.; sons-in-law, Bill Gunning of Palatine, Ill., and Bret Hammond of Sacramento; nieces, Anna Knowles and Cindy Hoffmann of Oberlin, Ohio, and Portia Johnson of Binghamton, N.Y; nephews, Paul and Peter Hoffmann of Oberlin, Ohio, and Adam Flint of Binghamton, N.Y.; brother-in-law Richard Hoffmann of Oberlin, Ohio; and, sisters-in-law, Gunvor Hite of Hudson, Ohio, Joan Hoffmann of Oberlin, Ohio, and Eileen Flint of Shingletown. A private family service will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in his name to the Nature Resources Defense Council, 71 Stevenson St., No. 1825, San Francisco, CA 94105.
